Today when i left work i got in my car and tried to start it and nothing happened when i turned the key. After messing with it for awhile a guy came over to help me and crossed the terminals on the starter and it started right up. Does this sound like the ignition switch is bad? or could it be something else?
Forgot to mention my car is a 2001 sunfire. 2.2l auto
i had the same problem with my 99 it was the ignition box on the steering colomn
Alright thanks for the reply. I'm going to try replacing that since its a pretty cheap part and doesn't look to difficult to do from reading my haynes manual.
Well i replaced the ignition switch. I was having trouble with my key not wanting to turn before and i think that the key isnt turning all the way to the start position. it turns only a little after the run position.
It turned out to be the lock cylinder. I picked one up at the yard for 16$ and stuck it in and it started right up. I thought it was odd that i didnt have to do the passlock relearn? From reading i was expecting to have to do that,
Does the old cylinder and new cylinder use the same key? If it does, no relearn needed.

No its a different key. I have to use my old key for the doors and the new one for the ignition. I pulled the new cylinder out of a wrecked 01 cavalier than had the key in it still. Ive been driving it around since i put it in. all i did was unhook the battery take the old cylinder out and put the new one in then hooked up the battery and started it. Odd, but i guess i can't complain about it.
There is no chip in those keys...

What's that have to do with anything?
Robert - very interesting. It may have been the same resistance, even with the different key. Did you pull just the cylinder, or did you get the cylinder and the casing with the hall-effect sensor and 3 wire passlock hookup?

It was the cylinder and the casing with the wire. I guess maybe i just got really lucky with it. Does the casing come off somehow? i was going to try an take the old one apart and clean it out and see if i could get it working again. There was a copper colored piece that i could see was popping up and keeping it from turning into the start position.
Yes, there's a tab from behind the back to push just the tumbler out.
