loud pop when i start to move
Wednesday, June 02, 2010 11:16 PM
I have a 2001 z24 whenever i start to move from a dead stop there is a loud pop sound. it also does this when im stopping sometimes and pretty muc hanytime there is a large amount of energy transfer. in addition, my passenger side wheel shakes when im driving and ultimately causes the entire car to shake like crazy (dash, seats, ect)

i think its my cv halfshaft on the passenger side but just wanted to get some other opinions before i tear into it.

Have you checked the condition of the CV shaft?. Sounds like it could be the problem. Also how are your'e ball joints and tie rod ends?. Any play in these parts.

Good Luck.

Ive been getting a clunk similar to the pop you describe for quite a while now. Well over a year. Only when accelerating from a stop or very low speed. No shaking or vibration though.

I have the same pop. No shaking or vibration. Relatively new, started doing it about a month ago. Only when from a stop and very low speed also.

both of yours are probably the same issue i had then. the cv halfshafts for stock arent bad but rebuilding/replacing them on a car thats nearly 10 years old isnt a bad idea. especially for the fact that once once you return your old one for a core they can be had for around 60 bucks each at autozone/checkers/ect.

jack up your car and see if you can hear the sound moving your halfshaft back/forth side-to-side with your hands. obviously not going to be as loud because theres not as much force being exerted but beleive me... youll know.

If I jack it up, leave the trans in N, and turn the wheel (either forward or back) it goes maybe 1/5 a turn then I get a clunk n I can feel it start to turn the trans internals.

I had the same issue, well actually it was more than one occasion and was actually three different parts, one the cvjoint was bad on-there was a loud banging around and a lot of shaking at high speeds, two was my upper motor mount(well it mite have been the lower stupid i-beamish mount on bottom as well-replaced them at the same time) but that had a clunk sound when I had any load on it stopping or accelerating, the third was my lower control arm bushings it wouldn't hold alignment to the stright, and had more of a pinging sound and a slight shimmy every so often(easily mistakable as a road unevenness it felt exactly the same as when you roll over a line in uneven pavement that runs down the middle of the road, As for your issue Ronin J that clunk is when the trans gears engauge or meet up with the position of the driveshaft, less only part of the shaft moves until the clunk you hear then its the joint, if not the noise is fairly common in an auto, not necessarily bad not necessarily good either, put, chang the fluid/filter* and put some lucas in it drive it for 500-1000 miles and see if there is any difference.(Filter for an auto). Good Luck to you
