2002 Cavalier, Ecotec, having issues revving past 3k-3.5k rpm

I have a 2002 Cavalier, with the 2.2 Ecotec engine.

A few weeks ago i noticed i was having an issue with getting my car upto speed while hitting the on ramp on the freeway, and more recently, I've been unable to rev past ~3500 rpm limit, I've checked, and replaced my plugs, just replaced my fuel filter, and out of frustration went to Autozone and saw i was throwing two codes, 1 for i believe the upstream o2, and 1 for the IAT sensor. The o2 sensor code had been throwing for over a year, and I haven't really had the time/money to replace it (bills, man) but the car ran fine, up until approx. a month and a half ago.

i replaced the IAT sensor a few minutes ago, and the guy at AutoZone was nice enough to clear my codes for me, however after replacing the plugs, the fuel filter, and the IAT sensor, i still am getting a cutoff at ~3500RPM, depending on what gear i'm in.

I used the search function on a few random questions, and was unable to find any threads relating to this.

Has anyone else had this problem? is there any threads i can read for some fresh ideas?

Much Appreciated,

a clogged cat could cause this problem. and since you neglected your front 02 sensor, the issue is fairly likely.

yeah if that o2 is bad it runs in limp mode so i'd say you loaded your cat with fuel... does it smell like bad eggs???

I have NO idea about the bad eggs smell, i'll check that out in a few when i run over to drop dinner off for my girlfriend, and update when i get back. but the more threads i've read on a clogged cat, the more it sounds like that is the issue. what's the going price for a shop to do something like that? do i have to replace the whole exhaust? and what would a cheapo stock, or aftermarket run?

do it yourself, save $$$.

otherwise, expect to pay near $500+ for a shop to do it.

I have a 02 cav as well with the ecotec. I had a o2 sensor code pop up and didnt come back on for a few months. I went ahead and replaced the o2 sensor.

Stick with AC delco parts for this car. stay away from bosch anything....

Also you will find when doing the o2 sensor that you wish GM notched out the heat shield for the o2 sensor socket. I busted a heat shield bolt off in the manifold.

oh yay. isn't that awesome. My other question is, i'm not good with any type of welding, and i'm assuming i'll need to weld this cat converter onto the car after removing the old one? or is it some sort of inline business? i feel like a moron, but i know mostly basic maintenance issues that my dad teaches me as they come up, this is something new entirely for me, and i know we don't have the welding equipment at my house to do something like this either, regardless of if my dad is capable, lol. I really appreciate the input from everyone, because we were really stumped today.

disconnect the rear o2 sensor plug, should be up by the firewall. or, alternatively, cut the wires at the old sensor. ose a box end wrench to get the old one off, and to put the new one on. connect the new sensor. done.
