I have read GM TSB's that say this engine is operating normal if it consumes 1 qt or less per 1000 miles. Is this more the norm, or the exception to the rule? My 1998 Sunfire 2.2L OHV is consuming a qt every 1000 miles of driving with no leaks or modifications. It does have 257K miles with a prior head job and 2 timing chains replaced. Just wondering if anyone else's engine consumes oil at this rate or not...
Thanks for your replies
that's pretty much the extreme limit of normal oil consumption. mine is a 96, and i'll use 1/2 qt between changes. it also depends on what oil you use, lower quality oils will burn faster than synthetics and higher quality conventionals.

If GM says that this is not abnormal, considering your high mileage and if your car is otherwise running well, then I wouldn't be overly worried. Do you run a synthetic? What weight oil do u use?
I was using conventional 5W-30 oil before. My rear oil seal started leaking and I had it fixed. Now I use AMSOIL 5W-30 synthetic oil and have only burned off about 1/2 quart in the last 1200 miles driven. I believe you are correct regarding less burn-off with synthetic oil. Thank you for your replies.
After switching to 5W-20, I'm not burning any oil at all with 135,000 miles. Try replacing your PCV valve.
I run Shell Rotella 15W 40. 150,000 miles. Never burned any oil.
