5Speed 2003 Ecotec....shifting issues

I'm in the process of trying to help my buddy.

He has a 2003, 5 speed, L61 Ecotec...with about 54,000 miles on it.

His cavalier doesn't want to go into First or Reverse with the car running, and is a little harder than normal to get into 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. If you turn off the car and row through the gears with the clutch in, it goes into any gear very easy.....and if you turn the car on will it is in first or reverse or any gear it is fine...until you leave the gear...

I re-centered the gear linkage, and it had no change at all with the car on....with the car off it feels better.

Bleeding the clutch has no effect at all on anything, and the clutch peddle is softer than mine on my hhr. My hhr is an F23, L61 with 60,000 mlies on it...
His clutch res is full, and no air is in the lines...

My idea is the clutch is not disengaging, but why?

Any ideas would help. To get to the slave, does the trans need to be dropped. I can not for the life of me find my hayes manual.

If it was the clutch.. it shouldn't be gear specific.

See if double clutching it allows a smoother transition into the gear. If it's a bad gear syncro this should bypass it. My syncro was done in my Eco's F23 in 5th gear... it would hesitate or grind if you tried to shift normally into 5th.. double clutch it, and it would go in as smooth as butter.

Double clutching has no effect at all.
