Locking Gas Cap, Cavalier 03-05?
Tuesday, July 20, 2010 3:55 PM
Hey guys. I did a search and came up with some topics not too recent. Figured I'd start a new one.

Recently some schmuck decided to hit some cars in the area by putting sugar in the tank. So for the vehicles on my property, I want to safe guard this and get a locking cap. Unfortunately for my car, an 05 Cavalier, GM doesn't make one. They also don't make one for the 07 Trail Blazer here. I found some aftermarket locking caps with good reviews. Anyone have any luck with a locking cap on anything 2002 and above? My g/f is lucky in this case, because she has a 94 which doesn't throw a code for that (from what I've read).

Any luck for their locking caps?

i know for my brother's 2004 avalanche he bought a stant cap... it threw a code, so he returned it and just used his oem one

save the receipt, as well as your oem cap & just go for it

good luck

I found Stant ones for my Cavy and TrlBzr for about $15 a piece. I ordered them. Figured it is only $15 or so for each. Not much of a loss if they don't work.

Alright, they just came this morning. Two day shipping isn't bad at all. They feel like pretty nice build quality. I got them installed, let's see what happens . . .

I'm looking to purchase a locking gas cap as well. My local NAPA auto sells one made by Balkamp (part # 7031643). Does anyone know if these will throw a code? Thanks.

I got one at Target last year. It was on clearance for, like, $3.50 or something. It came with two keys and hasn't caused any trouble, and it's damn near impossible to get off without the keys.

Well, been driving both the Cavalier and the Trail Blazer for about a week now. No codes from either. I wonder why GM dropped theirs?

Schmuck is right... they're wasting their time, as sugar won't do anything to your car.

Is the same schmuck selling locking gas caps, by chance?

John.

Well, I've read different sources online that say sugar won't do anything, and that sugar will. The theory is that the sugar will burn and turn into a sticky mess that will clog the fuel lines, injectors, and eventually the fuel pump burning it out. However, sugar doesn't dissolve in gas, and the gas tank does not get hot during the cars use, so it can't burn and turn into the sticky mess that will get into anything. At most, the screen on the fuel pump should stop it from getting into the system, as well as the fuel filter as well. However, the Trail Blazer doesn't have a fuel filter, lol

Yet, I've read online that some technicians have dealt with cars where the injectors have gotten sugar in them, which locked them up. So I don't know if it works, or what happened. Some say it can get into the system, some say it won't.

Who's selling locking gas caps . . .? lol

There are lots of things other than sugar that can kill a car... things such as urine, sawdust, plastics... you name it. A locking gas cap is a good idea, especially if you live in bad neighborhood

I just wonder what happens if the person comes back. If they notice the said cars didn't die, if they will try to increase the issue. Counter measures are in place though . . .

probably the best thing to do is to alert your neighbors to look for anyone suspicious hanging around the cars in the neighborhood... the only thing i would worry about is if he cant get into the gas tank, he might try to skewer the gas tank with a screwdriver... that happened around here a few years ago, but the dumbass left the screwdriver, with his fingerprints on it, and he had a record so finding him was a cinch.

Chances are, probably a bunch of stupid kids looking for thrills

Yeah, I already let the surrounding neighbors know. They didn't see anyone that night or hear anything. With my brother here and what not, we believe it happened between 10pm-1am. Not much the neighbors can see at that point.

they are actually easy to get off without the keys just take a flat screwdriver and put it into the key hole and hit it with a hammer, i know you didn't want to hear that .... you kind of get creative when you cant find the keys lol

If someone wants to screw with your car that bad a locking gas cap isnt going to stop them.

lol may just piss them off more and make them do something even worse.

Glad you found one that worked though.

Well if they are willing to try and nail the cap with a hammer, I think I'd hear it in time, then I'm running out with a weapon, lol
