Wheel Bearing
Friday, July 23, 2010 12:30 PM
Hello. The other day I noticed a sort of humming sound coming from the right side of the car when I turn to the left. I'm pretty sure that it is a wheel bearing but I cannot figure out if it is the front or rear bearing that is causing it. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I had a similar problem with my boy's Sunfire and the noise seemed to be all from the left side of the car in front. His hummed all the time over 45 mph and was so bad, it vibrated the drivers' left foot anytime it hit 45 mph. The passenger could hear the sound, but no vibration in the floorboard. I was out of time to work on it myself and finally took it to a mechanic. it was actually the right side front wheel bearing.

Just because the noise sounds louder on the right, doesn't mean it is the right side at all.

Its more than likely the front...they are well known for going bad on Js...the rears are much rarer. Ive had to replace both fronts on my 04. Drivers side went out at 108,00 and the passengers side around 128,000 miles.

Try listening to it in long turns, maybe around 30mph...if the noise gets louder in a right turn then its the right side, left its the left side. If it gets louder in both turns then both may be bad.

Also could try this...jack up the front of the car, both wheels off the ground. Set parking brake. Put car in drive (or 1st) and let the motor turn over the wheels. Listen to each side...if you hear a kind of grinding or scraping noise from the wheel likely the bearing on that side is bad.

I got to 2 front wheel bearing that are wornout, They are making loud metal to metal sound, this is the second time replacing them. I think I put 20,000 kms on them thats all. Back at replacing them again.
