Sunfire issues (help please)
Monday, July 26, 2010 8:26 PM
First off, sorry if this has been brought up before. I tried a search but nothing came up that fully answered my question and I can't search and search forever as I am quite busy. With that out of the way, I am driving a 2003 sunfire 5spd, which of course has the L61 ecotec. My car has 160k km's, which is 100k miles. It is giving some blue smoke out of the exhaust, but mostly seems to be at start up and first 30 seconds of driving. In the last 5000km's the car burned about 1.5 quarts of oil. Not sure if that's a lot or not I have read mixed opinions. I personally think it's a bit early on to have such an issue. I am going to switch my oil to Pennzoil High Mileage and add Lucas Oil Stabilizer, hoping to slow the rate of burning. How long do you guys think my engine will last at this rate? I really don't want to have to do a swap out, (I'm assuming a swap is better than rebuild?) I would just replace it with the same engine, with the least amount of wear as possible of course. Any opinions will be greatly appreciated, as I am a student with my first car. Thanks a lot!

It's got 160k, It will burn some oil.

Run it till it blows. Plenty of life left in it.

I know its gonna burn some, you don't think that's more than normal for an engine with that much use?

Where is the oil coming from that it's burning, valve seals? That's where I'd start - pinpointing the cause. Just because it's easy and takes me like 15 minutes, I'd do a compression check, see if there is noticeable oil in the intake, possible recirculating from the valvecover breather (if still connected by tube).. etc.. try to narrow it down.

engines do burn oil as the engine gets over 100k miles. make sure you don't have any leaks around the valve cover gasket/oil pan. swapping an engine due to oil burning is trivial at this point.
