P0171 and IAC Valve

Hello everyone,

I hope someone may be able to guide me in my little problem I am having with my 2001 cavalier 2.2L 5speed. I have a pacesetter header (Along with a custom exhaust), and have received the code for a slow oxygen sensor several times. I cleared the code and everything was fine. On my way home saturday I hit a HUGE puddle while making a very sharp right hand turn. The downpour had created a puddle where there has never been one before! The water went clear up over my windshield and 2 minutes later when I arrived at my destination it started idling very rough.

I drove it home and the CEL came on and i had it read... bad front O2. So i changed that guy out and it does the same thing, and on top of that, when i push in the clutch the RPMs rev up and want to go like to 2500 (If i shift over 3000 the rev up isn't as noticable). Then the code P0171 comes up (after the other one was cleared) for the lean fuel and that doesn't seem to make any sense to be because my exhaust smells like gas and a very rich fuel ratio. It almost sounds like it is missing at low idle but when I give it throttle it doesn't seem to miss...very confusing.

After reading online here I am going to try and clean my IAC Valve, does anyone else have any other suggestions on how to solve this problem? I'm not quite sure where the IAC is exactly but that is my next adventure on the site. Any suggestions would be greatly appeciated, and I threw in the story about the water in case that will help anyone!

Thank you for reading,
Kevin

Fireboy,

Check this out...I have been running it for several months and seems to be okay. I pulled power from the rear sensor, but now I am getting a bad reading from that one. However, that could be due to age.

Thats was a good post, Ima look around more when im up there, Going to do the IAC now, let you know how i fair out. Makes sense about the O2's being too far and not warming up.

Maybe replace the plugs and try that heated sensor? I am not sure. Hopefully someone else can be more informative.

Sorry about the spelling in that last one... A new header this weekend, new plugs too. if that alone does not help, i will go for the sensors, ill change both. Then its to a garage to diagnose it
