what would be the best or easiest way to take the motor out of a sunfire gt ? do i follow the haynes manual or is there a better way
Unbolt the transmission from the motor, Take the hood off the car, Then unbolt the engine mounts and wiring harness, chain the engine, then lift with the engine hoist. Then youre good to go.
Good Luck.
so you dont have to pull tranny with the motor i didnt think there was enough room to seperate them
no you don't have to we just finished pulling mine out sat. it took all day it was tricky the motor mounts are easy but the bolts to the trans a re a lil harder also the starter need to be out and the bolt in the flywheel need to be token out i took 3 of us and a pry bar to get it out after we did it i thought that i would have been easier to pull it all out but what ever you do organize know what bolt go were
i did a search on it and came up with someone saying that you have to pull both on the 2.4s ive also had people tell me to take the engine out from underneath i just want to figure out whats going to work before gettin my hands dirty so you sure its possible to take out the motor only
When i rebuilt my motor i dropped the engine/trans from the bottom.Easiest way in my opinion.

how exactley do you pull it out from the bottom
lower drop is tougher i think. u first need to get the car super high n then u remove the subframe bolts and the upper mount and trans mount and struts to drop out.(did this in the junk yard). now when i pulled out the other 3 engines we did it by taking the motor and trans out on a angle threw the top and then swapped trans outta the car easier to do more room. then dropped the whole thing back in. u will need to disconnect a lottta stufff. plan on if u never did keep ur weekend free.
Its always seems to be tough at first. Once you have done it, Its easy the next time go around. I prefer the taking it out from the top easy way in my opinion.
good Luck.
thanks for the help everyone . i have everything disconnected and labeled now its time to put the hoist to work
Its really easy, I pulled it out in a little under 2 hours. Just take off all the accesories, unbolt the trans, and motor mounts, and pull it from the top. Its pretty easy. Make sure all the wires are off the engine, pull the battery. Just disconnect the exhaust header from the engine, you dont need to pull it off the car. Other then that, just yank the engine. It isnt as hard as you think. Goodluck.
