car has been running fine no issues, went to go to the store the other day and made it a few blocks from the house. the car just shut off, no sputter, rattle or anything, just like i turned off the ignition. so far i have checked that i'm getting fuel to the rail, replaced the icm and the coil pack. it cranks but won't start. every once in a while it will try and start but sputter or small backfire and not start.
ideas?
First, be kind and tell us what car you have with what engine.
Do you have spark?
These modern cars are very dependent upon good electrical connections. Very often the ground wires get messed up which interrupts the good flow of power and the completion of a circuit.
Without a complete electrical flow the computer can't tell your injectors to fire and many of the sensors needed to run the car are not reporting in properly.
There are MULTIPLE ground wires on a car. Sure, the big one goes to the engine block, that is why your starter works.
How are your lights? Bright and blinding or dim?
Are your gauges acting funny?
Turn signals odd?
Radio, etc?
Locate, disassemble, clean with wire brush and sand paper and then tightly refasten all the grounds you can locate, most are within a foot or so of the battery itself.
Also clean all of the + wires and their attachment points.
Does it start now?
This may not be the problem though it has a good chance of being it. If it isn't, the cost of repair was minimal and you've eliminated one major weak link in the cars electrical system as being a problem.
Dave
Was unsure on spark hence why I replaced icm and coil pack. Check and rechecked all grounds. All accesories and lights are bright and good to go. Also checked fuses and relays. Still the same.
It's an 03 cavy. Eco 5spd
i'd check the crank position sensor.
87 Firebird
All stock...........lol.
Just hope it's not your computer by chance.

did you make sure you got a good set of coil packs ? its always better IMO to try ones that are known to work. new ones dont always work out. i know the ones i bought for my ohv didnt work. same for any car.
Is there any codes or CEL light on?? If so pull the code. Normally if it was crank/cam position sensor it will set a code and not let the car start bc the computer doesnt know where the crank/cam are. If its not those check the coil packs and such with a known good set bc AZN is right they dont always work right. I have seen them come defective out the box, so yeah. If none of those, then prolly the computer. Goodluck!
