how can i test to see if my fan is working/ turning on when it should be?

Turn on the A/C, if you have it. Fan should turn on when the A/C turns on. Thats the only way I know to ensure that the fan is working.

Depends on the car. J body's generally speaking, since they run on the hot side, will overheat if the fans never come on.
The fan is pretty loud. I'd find it hard to ignore if it's coming on.
What is the problem your having anyway? Is your car overheating?
My J ( 1997 2.2L) will for sure get way too hot if the fan doesn't kick on.... never let it get hot enough to see *how* hot, but enough that I wouldn't want it to happen.
