Ignition recall

Ok. So some years back there was an ignition recall for 95+ j-bodies, due to the steering column starting on fire from the switch. All they do is add a relay to it because I've had a relay on my upper radiator support since it was done. Does anyone have, or know where to get, the instructions on exactly where to wire the relay in to?

Reason is that my car has MS-II. The factory harness I'd had hacked up really bad and it looks like @!#$. Rather than try to straighten out a billion wires, I've got ahold of a harness and ECU from a 96 J-body. But this thing must have entered the yard before having had the recall done, so there's no ignition relay.

If I can find my old computer and still use SI I will try and pull up the info. May take a few days though.

Why bother adding it? Basicly the recall was due to extended period of time holding the key in the on position trying to start would over heat the wires. I refused to get it done to my car.

I know where the wires go on the motor and can post a pic of that if you need that. I could also trace where the wires go. Though I figure that is simple hot and ground off the battery more less. Let me know if you want me to.

I just want to put the relay in there because that's the proper way the car should be (should have been in the first place) wired. That and I've already caught the car on fire once, and would rather not do it again. So Just in case. The biggest part I was looking for is where to tap it into the C100 connector. The rest is pretty easy.

Go to the dalership and ask them. Most dealerships will give you a schematic or the directions without issues. It's not difficult though. I know that you need to cut the purple wire going ot the "S" terminal on the starter though. There will be a black wire that goes to the anchor bolt for the relay clip for ground, a wire that you butt connect to the purple wire coming from the ignition switch, a wire to B+ on the back of the starter, and a wire going to the "S" terminal on the back of the starter. The wire going to the "S" terminal from the relay should be purple and have a small eyelet on it. The wire going to the B+ terminal should be red and have a large eyelet on it. I can't remember what color the wire going to the one you removed from the "S" terminal of the starter is, but it should be the only wire without an eyelet on it. Hopefully this helps. Don't quote me on the wire colors though as it has been years since I worked in the dealerships and haven't done that particular recall in as long. Again, hopefully this helps.

As JCZ Z24 says.. They take the purple wire from the start position (that feeds the starter solenoid) and put that through a relay instead. All the power and ground connections are done at the starter solenoid.

I'll send you a link that will work

Any idea what gauge wire they use for the power/ground of the relay?

Not sure, I guess I could look at it. It all comes as a kit.

Sweet, thanks for the link. I read over it (before looking back at this post) and it looks like it's just the one wire that I need to tap into my existing harness. I might just run out and look at the old harness and see where exactly they spliced into it at.
