Prime Oil Pump??
Wednesday, September 08, 2010 1:14 PM
I was just wondering if any one has any suggestions on how to prime the oil pump when installing a new motor. I figured either manually crank it over or disconnect fuel and spark then crank the engine over. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

since the oil pump runs directly off the balance shafts (which are driven by the crank) in the 2.4, the only way to build pressure would be to rotate the engine. either way you described would do the trick. turning it over by hand would just take a bit longer.

I would remove the spark plugs before cranking the engine, so it will spin faster without the compression and you will have less strain on the starter.

From the 13 Motor Changes i have personally done in the last year, 5 of them have been brand spanking new. We just pull the fuel pump relay and crank the motor with the starter for about 10-20 seconds. And do that about 2-3 times. Best is to hook a battery jumper to it, so you dont kill the battery (we do it all the time) and it should be more then enough to prime and build pressure in the system. When I rebuilt my girls LD9 we did that just that, and the motor started with perfect oil pressure. So I would do it that way and not worry.
