P0442 Evap system leak SMALL
I cleared my code with a buddies Actron scanner on Saturday, and like expected it came back 52 miles later. I have cleared the code 3-4 times, and it takes 52 miles to come back everytime.
I have changed my fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, and thats when it came on. I am thinking there mioght be a tear in the rubber gasket around the fuel pump assembly/cup that locks onto the tank.
Does anyone else have any ideas?
Also, I am thinking that if the car leaves the code off got 52 miles, then if i can get it cleared, i have a 52 mile window to get it through emissions. Would that be true, or will it still show up on the tester they use?
was hoping people will have suggestions before that. not really wanting to pay a shop a visit. are there do it yourself smoke test kits?

no.
also;
i wrote: 0440 relates directly to the evaporative emissions system. the parts that it monitors include (from stern to stem): the gas cap, the gas fill neck, the gas tank, the gas tank pressure sensor, the vacuum lines running from the tank to the evap canister, the canister itself, the valve on the canister, the lines from the canister to the purge valve, the purge valve itself, and finally, the line from the purge valve to the intake manifold.
if any one of these 16 parts is faulty, it could trigger the 0440. the most common place to begin diagnosis is with the gas cap, as if not screwed on tight enough (by yourself or the gas station attendant) -or- if the rubber on the cap has degraded enough to not make a seal, then this code could be thrown. a gas cap should not cost more than $6-$8 at your local parts tore. next, a visual inspection of the lines to see if any are cracked, broken, kinked, or otherwise pinched off/leaking. if, after these inspections have been made and determined to not be the cause of the problem, i wold recommend getting your emissions system smoke tested.the parts after these simple diagnoses can get quite expensive depending on where you get them from, and as such, you'll only want to change the part thats causing the issue.
this applies to all evaporative emissions codes.

And yes emissions would catch it. It takes a bit of driving for the car to pass all it's tests. Everytime you clear it they all start over. So you can't just squeeze through.

^^^ yup
They will hook up a scanner and see that not all readiness monitors have run their tests... evap, cat etc... They are based on driving cycles... you cant pass until all have run..
they have thought of that little loophole, unfortunately.. But i would agree that the gas cap is the mostly likely culprit... and the cheapest to fix so its worth a try
GAS CAP X2
If I had a nickel for every time a gas pumper left my cap loose in Jersey, I would get half way home to PA, and POOF, CEL. I'd get out, tighten the cap, get home and by the next mornings drive to work light would go off.

funny on my ford ranger i just had changed the fuel pump and 50 miles after driving i got p0442 small leak etc. i cleared it and it has yet to come on again. if it does since a mech did it i will return it and get it smoke tested.

If none of the above works, check the wires between the body pass-through under the rear passenger seat and the evap canister vent valve. During my experiences in the deealership, I had seen many times, especially on J body cars where the wires would corrode or break at the body pass through connector and a P0442 code would throw as a result. It's a simple and easy check before tearing into too much labor intensive work.
