Saturday, September 18, 2010 3:07 PM
hi, well i have problem. the car been sitting all summer because i'm redoing interior. i just started once in a while. last time i drove it was when i got it out of storage, around 50km everything went fine. now i see white smoke at tail and missing coolant! i tested the pressure in each cylinder and have equal 270psi in each cylinder. wouldn't the pressure be low if gasket was shot??? i have the MLS gasket by the way. its a 2.4l
also the car sound like a wrx, and no power. looks like its not running on 4 cylinder.
any help would be appreciate
thanx

Remember that when the engine is running, coolant is being pumped through under pressure, thus it takes a very small leak in the head gasket to cause serious problems. It probably wouldnt show up on a compression test, especially if you didnt fully warm the engine first.

I was told black smokes means oil and white is coolant
And yrs looked black

My car has white smoke until it warms up then nothing
I'm still trying to figure it out

I had a head-gasket leak on my old 88 Cavalier forever ago - and it was WHITE smoke. A lot of it - though I'm sure that all depends on the size of the leak. I also had milky-white stuff (coolant) in the oil.

Just to clear up some things:
White Smoke=Coolant leak into Cyl.(usually head gasket)
Blue Smoke=Oil Leak into Cyl.
Black Smoke=Running Rich/dumping Fuel

Ur car has black smoke. Which means the HG is good. I think the issue u have right now with the black smoke, is ur dumping raw fuel. Which means you might not be firing on all Cylinders. Check all the spark plugs, wires and the aftermarket ignition module. Something has to be going wrong with one of those. You have compression and such, and black smoke is usually meaning ur dumping raw fuel, and not burning it all. Also, since there is no power and the such, check your Catalitic converter (sp??) sometimes when they clog, it causes a no power issue, and can cause black puffs of smoke. Goodluck!

yeah on the vids smoke is black probably because its running too rich. but i assure you its burning coolant and there is white smoke. i mean i filled it, start it and wait until it get to operating temp and i was already low on coolant. anyway timing chain is apart right now and will be installing a copper sce gasket.
thanx for helping guys

Yeah I was gonna say, if your sure its burning coolant then go for it. I know a white smoke (very light and dissipates a few inches past the exhaust pipe) is very common on any car. My Escalade, no matter the temp, would blow that type of white smoke, even after its been driven to operating temps, and 99.9% of the time at startup for a few mins, so that is normal, especially since I never lost any coolant. The funny thing with these cars is that since there is no way to get into the radiator directly we have to fill from the bottle. I know there has been plenty of times I have tried to fill these cars up with coolant only to have the low coolant light come on a few hours later, after I thought I was done. Trust me, i know lol. But since ur doing it anyways, goodluck!
