The best way to prime motor for start up
Sunday, October 17, 2010 8:25 PM
Just got everything back together with the 2.2 OHV 4 popper, and im curious on how to prime one of thiese motors, im not quite ready to fire it up since i still have the rad to put in yet, but that will be next week. I did put assembly loob and oil on the main's and rod's and cam bearings, plus the oil pump gear and lifters were well oiled as well.

Thats pretty much all you can do on our motors, at least that I know of. The two times I have rebuilt my engine this is the way I have done it as well. No issues what so ever.

Ok so i got it all back together, put some oil in it along with a new filter, and began to spin the motor with out the plugs in, and had almost no oil coming up thru the rockers. Now if the oil was coming up thru the lifters and all like its suppost to, should'nt it shoot out like a scort gun? Mean while i decided to just take the pan back down, so i can try to do a better job at packing the pump this time. But in any event, i did throw a compression guage at it while pumping the oil up, and it read 175 psi, so im deffenently pumped about that. So now im thinking about packing the pump with assembly lube this time, ? is do i just stick the assembly lube in were the gears are, or am i suppost to pack the pickup tube aswell?

i didn't pack the pump on mine, and i certainly wouldn't consider doing so. if it's too thick, and becomes lodged in an oil galley, it will cause starvation issues.

-edit-

assembly lube is only for the first few moments of an engine startup, before the oil is actually circulated to take the place of said lube. if the pump can't pump oil because it's picukp tube is stuffed full of something as thick as assembly lube, you'll get no oil to flow throughout the engine. bad juju.

and that's what you hsould be using. but don't "pack"the oil pump. it's designed to pump oil, not assembly lube.

Yeah i decided to take the oil pump that i took back out of the motor and hold it by hand with just the end of the pick up tube, and hold it down in a pan of oil. Attached a drill to it, and it sucked the oil right up, and the faster i spun it, the more it pumped. I did notice the if i spun the pump about the same speed that the motor turns over while trying to just prime the motor, the pump would only pump out a small amount. Although this pump was the one that was in the motor, and did look ok, i think that i'll just chuck it and get a new one, to be on the safe side.
