ANNOYING clicking noise from heater
Sunday, December 05, 2010 12:37 PM
ive had a verrry annoying clicking noise from the heating system somewhere anytime its set for anything but vents.. floor and defrost click say once a second forever... never stops. click...click...click...click... damn it
i think its some thing jammed in the flaf stoping it from switching from fresh air to recirculate..

anyone have this problem? its a 2003 ecotec
is there any easy way to access it? or can i remove/ plug one of the vacume tubes off the controlls to "lock out" the freshair/recirculate switching?

you can access the blades of the blower from either the wiper cowl or removing the dash pad n moving the airbag outta the way. youll see it sitting right there maybe clogged.

Sounds like you got a leaf caught in the fan blower motor.

not sure about a leaf.. its a fairly loud solid noise... and i dunno about moving the airbag i try to leave those alone

id agree its probably a leaf or something similar, I had some how got a peice of plastic down into mine and it made a horrible noise like it was dieing.. if 03s have a similer set up for the blower fan housing you can access it under/behind the glove box. there will be three small bolts ( forget the size) two towards the front sides and one in ther back that would need a socket piece that bends like a knuckle to help make it easier to get at. lower out and clean it.

It is your recirculation actuator. changes door for inside to outside air. Easiest way to replace it is remove the pass front seat lay on the floor with your head under the dash. Actuator is up the side between the heater box and the body on the pass side.

How dyou remove the cowl to get to it? I need to take a look at mine. Sounds like I have a piece of paper in there, drives me insane.

Its actually held in by those stupid little push clips. Just pop the centers out, and then the whole thing comes out, and just remove them all. You may not be able to get it all out bc the wipers arms hold it on IIRC but you should be able to raise it high enough to get ur hand in there and remove whatever is causing the issue. Which reminds me, I have what sounds like a piece of paper in there and Its driving me nuts too lol

I am gonna replace my wiper arms anyway. They are rusty, and the paint is chipped. Might as well do both at the same time. I figured they were held in with those stupid clips.

Thanks man.

I would replace it. If you are going to go through the trouble to reach up there and unplug it you might as well replace it. It is held to the hvac box with 2 or 3 5.5mm headed screws.

IIRC when you pull the nuts off the tops of the arms, I dont think they just pop off, I think you will need a battery terminal puller. Im not 100% sure but I think the arms are pressed on, persay.

And Zsquee24 I dont think he will be removing the blower motor, but instead just removing the cowl and reaching down into there and removing the debris that is in the motor itself. Plus, dont take this the wrong way as im not bashing you, but I can understand ur logic, BUUUTTT why would you say to replace it just bc he is in there. If the blower is ok, and not malfunctioning at all, and just having noise due to something being stuck in its fins, why would you say to just replace a good part?? I can understand you saying hey ur there might as well, but if he was having issues then yeah, but he isnt having no problems. Just askin?? Thats all

lol its not the blower motor... the fan its self does not make the noise its what ever switches from fresh air to recirculate. and it only happens when its cold, has for years but never in summer.

Thanks for the tip. I'll keep that in mind. I'm not doing this now anyway, it's way to cold, and I have no garage.
