My engine recently while sitting at idle or just parked in garage will make a unexpected
/ sparatic/ sudden noise at of the blue don’t know where but from engine bay.
It’s like a loud clank! Really weird on this one it happens with engine hot, warm, I think also it happens with engine code. It’s hard to find because i would have to sit near it for minutes before it decides to go “CLANK” again
Was wondering if im crazy or someone else’s jbody does the same?

I have the same thing going on with mine but I've found that the noise is coming from under the timing cover it do not make the noise when it first starts up but after it gets warm up it starts to make the noise I have not had time to work on it more but it sounds like something rubbing the timing cover it just has that hallow tin noise to it I got to pull the motor out for other reasons and when i do that be one of the first things i will be looking at when i do

Since you're already pulling it out, I'm gonna throw a guess and say bad timing belt tensioner. Get back to me whenever, I wanna see if I'm right lol
How can I find out is my timing belt needs replacing? Car has 120k I bought it 84k and I'm second onwer.

?
what does that mean? also what area is the noise coming from? left, right, front, back, top, bottom? alot of things can make noise and from experience with other people describing noises, your ''clank'' is another mans ''knock'', you said it's random, could you try making a video or atleast find one on youtube not having to be the same engine as you, just same noise?

We don't have timing belts, we have timing chains which almost never break, sometimes they stretch or the tensioner on them go bad which will make noises from where the chain sits, but for the most part, they never need to be changed or serviced.
Just take the timing cover off and check... might as well replace the chain, tensioners, and guides while you're at it. My muffler pops when the engine is cooling off...

sorry meant to say engine COLD not code. its coming from like center of engine bay i cant pin point it exactly were the sound comes from.

My 00 Vert use to make a REAL LOUD clank in the exhaust system, and it only did this when hot. For some reason it came from the damn muffler. Not saying this is ur issue, but I replaced my muffler and it went away. Maybe try that, or listen for it while its off. Does this happen when the car is on or off??
And 95lscoupe,
Im sorry but ur last statement, wasnt 100% correct. Timeing chains do in fact break. And they do need to be replaced once every 100,000 miles or so as a preventative maintence. Not trying to kick u in the nuts, but they do need replacement. The guides are also problematic in LD9's. But if this was a timing chain problem, it wouldnt be just a clunk. It would sound like ball bearings are in the top of ur engine bouncing around. So I doubt this a timing chain issue. I know these cars do have a tendency to clunk when off. Y idk. But they do. Like I said mine did it in the muffler all the time after it was shut off. And it sounded like someone took a hammer and a quick whack at the muffler. Hope this helps buddy.
