My 96 2.2L is making a weird noise from around the middle to left area (When looking under the hood) of the car . I don't think it's the alternator. The sound is a grinding or vibrating type noise. I keep up on oil changes and do a lot of preventative maintenance. I have no cel or other lights on or anything. I don't really know how to describe the noise really other than that. It is noticeable from the interior a little bit. Sounds like it may be something internal? Could it be because of the cold? ...I'm in WI. Thanks!!!!!

Maybe with a flexible hose, one end in your ear and the other sticking it to the different parts of the engine you could pinpoint what is making the noise or where it comes from.

Ya I've tried that before.. still seems confusing to exactly where ....the block area..but not from the block itself ...I don't know its a weird sound ..and sometimes it's not there and some days it is ...any ideas what it could be and not set off any dash lights? Thanks

Best advice I could give ya, Take off the serpentine belt off, See if anything changes. Then you can narrow down the problem. The serpentine belt could have a piece missing. Or bearing worn out on your'e alternator or water pump.

Take a youtube video of the noise so we can possibly hear it. Some sounds are very distinctive.
