1998 head replacement
Saturday, December 25, 2010 8:32 PM
I am about to tackle my sisters 98 Cav with 2200 in it. While I've replaced the head gasket on a number of these engines over the years, I am stuck will pulling a head from the yard this time (I am 3 states away from home and doing this on the fly) and just hope to get teh car up and running for a bit.
If it was upto me, I'd replace the motor as it is high milage, but not an option i think.

Anyway, everything I read states that only a 1998 head (or whole engine for that matter) is going to fit. I've been dealing with GM for so long now I have found that usually many more years will "work" but might require additional parts, or work done to make them work.
Given limited yard choices on hand I was wondering if the other 99-2002 engines were still something I can drop on. Performance is NOT a goal, so making the engine lose HP is not a factor in any way. It just needs to run for basic driving.
Current plan is to secure a working head, replace HG, head bolts, coolant, oil and filter and get it rolling on the cheap. No the head will not get resurfaced as finding a machine shop on a holiday weekend that can do that is probley not gonna happen. So I am stuck dealing with doing the best job I can of checking it for straightness.

Am I correct assuming that a post 98 head will work? Or if not, what other parts would be required to make said head work?

Thanks guys.

Correction, after going out into the nasty cold and taking the VC off, I see nothihng but black charcoal scaled up. Books also say only a 98 engine shall work. I'm presuming that the other years from 99-02 will work as well and that it wil be something simple like a fuel rail swap is needed or something. Can anyone for sure confirm this?

I thought the 2200 was the same from 98 to 02 but not 100% sure.

Well, I picked up a 2002 motor from a wreck at a yard up in Nashville. Just under $200 out the door w/30 day war.

Only changes I see are the location and plug for the air valve which is under the intake on the '02 and on top of the VC on the 98. So easy change there. Also a 4 wire O2 instead of the 98's 1 wire.....and the biggest change is that the 02 does not have port for the EGR. I intend on just pugging in the old EGR, and letting it hang down and see what happens. Motor looks perfect inside and came from a car under 100k so not too worried about running. All other sensors and stuff seems to be correct.

Got the engine swapped but have not hooked everything up as yet. But will soon.

A few minor brackets were changed it seems like the engine to trans bracket for the autos is steel and used different bosses on the block. coolant pipes were changed a bit and shorter as they did not have to go around the EGR.

Engine ran ok, but I soon discovered she had multiple exhaust leaks, which created a CEL as soon as it warmed up. Kept fouling #2 plug, and water in the intake lead to many hours of a no-start condition. Once enough water was pumped out the plug holes, the car ran ok. I am thinking maybe a leaking injector is causing the fouled plug. I had to drive back to Michigan and my step father is now dealing with things.
It only took him like 6 hours to check the wrong spark plug, and change the thermostat out. I have a feeling I'll be driving back down to Nashville to work on it some more.
