I scanned my ABS codes today and it is saying that my left rear ABS sensor is shot. The mechanic told me that it is a difficult job to change it out since the back plate has to come off, they want 200$ with parts to fix it. I took a look at my Haynes manual it seems pretty straight forward, take the wheel off, take the drum off, and unbolt the hub assembly. The ABS turns on usually on the highway and sometimes intermittently. Can I clean the sensor using brake cleaner???

It's pretty simple to do just that drum brakes take long to put together and get apart...yes you can clean the sensor with brake cleaner, but if I'm not mistaken, it's not too much money for a new one...might as well while you're in that deep just throw a new one on

Be advised, the bolts/nuts that hold the bearing housing to the swing axle can be a bear. Suggest you have a torch available to heat up the nuts to aid in removal, for it's easy to rip up the Torx heads on the bolts and be up the proverbial creek on this one.

Haynes manual says you don't have to remove the brake components. It says once you remove the hub assembly , put 2 bolts back in to hold the entire brake assembly in place to the backing plate.

The mechanic its wrong about the backing plate. But there is no way to get to the sensor, it is integral to the hub. You replace the bearing to replace the sensor.
