2004 Cooling fan problem
Monday, February 14, 2011 1:31 AM
Back about a week ago, we had an ice storm. I went to warm up the car, got in it about 2-3 minutes later, and smelled what smelled like burnt wiring. The check engine light came on.

I shut off the car, checked the trouble, it came up cooling fan circuit. I got to looking, and ice had gotten on the fan and froze it solid.
I then got the ice off, checked and replaced the burnt fuse. The fan came on, check engine light went off.

About a day later, the check engine light was back on, I scanned it, same thing. I then replaced the fuse and the relay. Light went out, but came on again yesterday. Fuse was burnt.

If I put a new fuse on it, the fan comes on when I first start the car, then blows the fuse. I'm guessing I burnt the wiring somewhere, but where should I start looking since it's heavily wrapped on most of the wire? What are my options from here?

Thanks!

I would check the fan motor 1st it could have a burnt a winding in it , if you can smell the fan motor it mite smell burnt , and if thats ok then look at the wiring .

Geez... Took it to the stealership this morning, because I couldn't find any fried wires, and the fan itself would come on if I put a new fuse in it...

Here's what I got:
fan motor bad, 375 plus labor
I'm not sure where they get their gold plated radiator fans, but no way this can be a 375+ part.

He also told me that my radiator hoses are collapsing, and they would replace them, thermostat, and a flush, all for the low price of 750.
Again, I think I could mold my own hoses, suck out the coolant, and pay for the hospital time for less than that.

Needless to say, I'm going to do it myself.... Hopefully this weekend.

Collapsing hoses, on a 04?? WOW. Im glad I dont rape my customers like that. Just feel the hoses, are they really really soft and very squishy?? If so, replace them, if not, dont worry. I am willing to bet the thermostat is just fine, and so is your coolant. Replace the fan, its like 70 bucks or so complete from like autozone. Then go from there. Goodluck!

It's got about 113.000 miles on it, the lower hose is starting to go. The fan I'm not really worried about, looking through old post on here looks pretty easy. I've never done a thermostat on a Cavi (my other 2 didn't make it past 60,000), so not sure about doing it.
My main problem is I live in apartments since the paperwork on our new house keeps getting delayed (were supposed to be in 2 weeks ago) so I can't work on it here, so I'm trying to borrow a garage....

Ahhh, okay that makes sense now lol. The thermostat is kinda tricky on these cars/motors. It can be done, but its a little hard. You need the garage for that one. The lower hose will be a easy swap. The fan also is a easy job. The thermostat is the one that will take a little time. Look around here and there are some how-to's on that. Goodluck!

Thanks for the help, I'll look up how to do it, since I'll have the hoses off anyway. I've also got a repair manual, but getting first hand knowledge about it always help IMO.
