feels like a miss

first of all i have a 1999 2200 with the 3-speed auto. when im running about 45mph or faster the temp gauge will bottom out and the engine will spit and sputter and feels like it misses. when im sitting in a drive-thru or at a red light and the temp gauge rises and the fan kicks on, the motor will sometimes sputter and die when i try to pull out. what could cause this?

after the engine is warm and im driving down the road, the temp gauge will drop like it is when you first start the car. and the engine feels like it misses. but if im sitting somewhere and the engine is at idle for a long period of time, the temp gauge will go over to the red like its over heating and the fan will kick on ( i know this is normal), but when this happens and i try to pull out the engine acts like it misses and will die. could it be the thermostat, temp sensor, or something different?

Thermostat could be the problem. Has the car recently had a full tune up? plugs / air filter / fuel filter? How about fuel pump psi test done? How about engines cyls compression test done?.

Good Luck.

Get a good thermostat, try that. When the engine is running cold, more fuel is being pushed through to warm it up, maybe causing it to sputter.
Otherwise, probably the headgasket.

it only sputters after the engine is up to operating temp, and when im going down the four lane/interstate at 45-75mph. OR when its already at operating temp and i stop for a red light after the cooling fan kicks on it will sputter when i start to pull out. does it still sound like a thermostat?
