New 2 Me Cavi Q's

Picked up a 99 Cavalier 2.2L Auto today. 170,000 on the counter, runs real good, shifts good. Body's a mess, clean inside. Got some Q's.
Has a howl when first started, somewhere in the Belt Drive. Goes away after a bit. Sounds like a Idler Pully or a Tensioner. Wondering if one or the other is prone to fail, or just better to change both. Its got a new Alt.
Also, how do I know if I have a 3 speed or 4 Auto? I don't remeber seeing a Cruise Control any where, is it possible to add it?

Got any must do's?

Belt issue could be the tensioner. Not sure what you have for acessories, (A/C or not) so can't be more specific.
You can tell if its a 3 speed or 4 speed by the shift console. If it says PRND321 then its a 4 speed. If its just PRND21 then you have a 3 speed.

Cruise control is on the turn signal lever on our cars. IF you don't have it, go to a junkyard and start gathering components and you can add it pretty easy. I think there is a How-To on here somewhere.

MUST DO= Change plugs and wires, check the trans fluid and make damn sure that all fluids are properly filled... these cars are picky about that. PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE TRANSMISSION!!!

Oh, yeah TY.
I looked for a Trans dip stick, But??? I saw just a red cap, I'm not to familiar with that. How do I check the Trans fuild. Also does have A/C.

Im gonna agree with Road to Change except for one point. If it has 170,000 DONT TOUCH THE TRANS FLUID!! I say this because you have no idea if its ever been changed, and if it hasn't, you do stand a huge chance of causing the trans to slip after the fluid change. Let me explain why. Transmissions are very finikey. They tend to build up crud and such inside of it. After so many years of usage and no changing it actually becomes use to that fluid with all the gunk built up in it and such. When you do a spill and fill (drop the pan and replace the dumped fluid and trans filter) or doing a flush (taking it to a shop and having them hook it up to a machine), you stand the chance of removing all that sludge that was fine in your transmission and actually causing the clutch packs to move farther away from each other. If they move farther away from each other, that causes the slipping and such. If it were me, I would just drive the car with the same fluid thats in the trans thats in it now until it dies. Trust me, I have seen newer cars with not even a quarter of your miles come into the dealership i worked in and do a trans service and have 40-50,000 miles and leave not having all the gears. And the customer cant say anything about it, because we tell them that they stand the chance of loosing gears and actually have them sign a wavier holding us not liable. So your call buddy. Im sure there will be someone that will disagree with me, but its your call. I know what I have seen, and 9 times out of 10 the tranny will not act right afterwards. Like I said, some have it happen, others dont, and im sure some will say they did it at 200,000 miles, and they had no issues. But from a professional standpoint, I would honestly tell you to not do it. Again, your call. Goodluck!!

tensioner and idler pulley on that motor are fairly simple and cheap to do, maybe take off the belt and spin each pulley, or just replace them both at same time along with a new belt

12DNRP is 3spd
123DNRP is 4

cruise control is on the one of the turn signal on the steering column like RoadTOChange said, junk yard parts should be easy to find and do

as for transmission, i wouldn't mess with the fluid, maybe top it off if its low, but i would drain and fill it

Unfortunatly these cars dont have trans dipsticks. There is a plug on the transmission, Car has to be level, and you pull the plug, and when it leaks out, ur full. But for the life of me, I cant remember where its at lol. There is a manual for download somewhere on this site, and it tells you where its at.

yes the isuzu transmissions do have a dip stick, but whoever designed the trans was a dip stick for putting it where its at
