I have a 97 Sunfire GT 2.4L 5spd. Not long ago my car began to make a slight clunk when making left hand turns. I had thought it was related to the drivers strut tower (I lost a nut when putting on a GM vert strut bar, replaced with one lying around. go me!), but even after replacing it with the right one, the clunking progressed. It's gotten to the point now where no matter what direction I'm turning it clunks and these clunks have gotten harder. It will even do it curtain times when I let out the clutch or let off the gas while rolling in gear. The odd thing is when I press in the clutch while turning the clunk wont happen and it has also began to pull to the left heavily when accelerating. Could it just be a seriously wrecked drivers side axel thats having a spaz attack or is it my transmission that's decided to tell me kiss off? Any opinions would be GREATLY appreciated!
"Is that your exhaust or is that the sound of someone deflating a cat?"
it's definately not a wheel bearing. all 4 of them were replaced about 8,000 miles ago. I'm leaning towards the CV, but still wondering about tranny because now 2nd gear is starting to grind and the vehicle speed sensor just took a crap. I replaced the sensor and here's what the old one looked like:

Drain the trans oil and see what that looks like . that should tell if you have a trans problem .
something is grinding in the tranny...
ill bet the sensor would still work if you just cleaned it
Ewww... thats not good... you have something on its last leg, whether its a synchro or an actual gear, that puppy is close to done.

I got the axel out today. that sucker was TOAST. I cut the boot to take a peak inside and holy @#$%!! The trans fluid only had some residual debris from the old speed sensor but other than that no foreign particles. I have new axels ordered and seals as well. Figured I have it all apart, may as well change them too. Inside the trans(as far as I can see anyways) seems to be ok. The gears that are in view appear to be undamaged. But, do you guys think I should say screw it and replace the trans anyway?

Judging by the crappy on the vss I'm going to assume your differential is toast.
Ask me how I know. Just did the Isuzu to getrag swap due to a toasted differential.
Your cv axle wouldn't put metal shavings into the transmission.
"Oil Leak ? What oil Leak ? Oh, Thats Just The Sweat From All The HorsePower!!"
I was debating that swap. how hard was it in comparisson to just putting in another isuzu?
