Hey guys i need to fix my #4 cylinder on my 2.2 ohv and i heard about the heli coils but what size would i need. i just dnt want to screw this up.
Thanks in advance for any help recieved
Stripped a spark plug huh. lol. the best thing u can do is get the size that matches the thread on the spark plug, drill out and retap the hole for the next size larger, thread the new plug and heli coil in and fixed. BUT, it is very recommended that u pull the head to drill out the hole so u dont get shavings in the engine.
mhm yea its sux. ruining my mpg too
and with these gas prices lol i need to fix it soon!! but umm wats the average size for a spark plug so i kno the next size up?
I honestly dont know.lol. i would go to the parts store ask for one plug since u will need it, then go look at the helicoils. then just match them up.
alright well thanks anyway lol
just get a different head man...you will thank yourself later.....Heli-Coils work ok when done properly..but they are easy to mess up.....
You will need a 14mm insert, they make special ones for spark plugs. You will also need the special drill, tap, install tool. They come in a kit. My advise,if you have never done this before is to take it to a shop. The cost of the kit is almost the cost of the labour to do it,besides if you screw it up you will be "screwed". Most good shops have them on the shelf,I have over $2,000 worth of helicoils in my shop and use them often.
Youll probably either have to a a really good professional welder fix it for you or just buy a new head.
Helicoils tend not to work well on spark plugs because of the heat and compression forced on them. (it would work at least for a little while though)
Speaking of new head, I know NAPA sells a rebuilt head (just no rockers) that U can pull the old one off, transfer the rockers and bolts and such, and throw it in. IIRC there around 350 plus a core. Not bad on price.
