heres the deal i bought this car from a guy and my buddy alos bought a car from him about 6 months ago both car he ownned for about 8 yrs. my buddy did head gaskets and was FULL of sludge. the guy claimed to change his oil every 2k miles and seemed honest. but in the trunk of my car i found 1/2 a quart of non detergent motor oil. which i think may explain the sludge issue. my engine ticks i think its timing chain and possibly lifters to. he did the timing set just recently that i am sure of. but it is making noise. i am thinking sludge maybe a reason. how can i get it out without harming my engine or my wallet. thanks guys
only surefire way is a rebuild. otherwise, in order to thin out the sludge, you have to this out the oil. thin out the oil, and you'll grenade the engine.

what about changing oil more often for awhile or using seafoam or a diesel oil?
The easiest way and safe is pour 1 can of seafoam in the crankcase(as you would adding oil).Run for 100 miles or more.Drain and change your oil and filter. If alot of trash comes out drive for a good amount of time(1000 miles?) and pour another can of seafoam into it and do the same process. This will thin the oil and loosen up debris gooked up.There is also a product made by gunk comes in a qt can does the same thing(it is kind of like kerosene). And it recommends pour in run engine for 5 minutes then drain oil, change filter/oil.I suggest seafoam myself. This should eleviate some buildup but,not necessarily all of aside of a engine tear down.I may suggest at least remove your valve cover and take a real view of things after the first seafoam treatment and put in a new gasket. At least that way you can clean up the valve train using brake clean if it is really that bad and let the brake clean drain out before installing the plug and changing oil!!!!!!!!!!!!
alright. tomorrow morning i was going to pull the valve cover off. how much would you consider normal for these engines?
Idk on that I am first gen owner. And I can tell u when I did my eng restore job, removing the valve cover and pan guess what I found.NO sludge, just the oil residue as it should be at 205,000 and 26yrs old.Theorectically I would say it should not have more than a 1/8inch or enuff to cover your finger when swiping it.But who knows being the prev ownr may have been a long term rider b4 changes and oil breaks down(loses viscoisity) and gook starts to form if over a long period of doing so.Honestly I am guessing at the possibilties due how it was really maintained.Good luck.If you pull the cover and little residue it evident that is a good sign.
pulled the valve cover off there was no buildup at all. looked like new. i was shocked after 206k miles i figured there would be something. i could see the casting numbers on the head. to plain as day. the rocker bolts were loose tightend them up put it back together. sounds good now . changed the oil to castrol syntec 10w30 andf it made it even quieter. now all i hea is a hint of timing chain ticking once the engine is fully warm. not sure why. the whoe timing assembly is almost new less that 8000 miles. but it seems to run good even smoother than before i think. do all 2.2 ohv have that timing chain noise ive heard several that do but havent paid attention to it real well in the past. btw i like the square body cavaliers before 95 i like 95 and up to but they have more of a tuner car look where as the older ones have more of a muscle look to them. maybe thats just me but thats my opinion. thanks for the help to. if you can let me know what your opinion is on the timing chain noise and the loose rocker bolts. thanks alot i appreciate it
He lied about the oil changes
I'de still be weary not rebuilding it. but flush it and cross your fingers I ques.
As for the loose bolt (and basically everything else) its all due from lack of maintenance.. you supposed to pull the valve cover and check that crap at least once every 10 years FFS.
if he lied about the oil changes wouldnt there be sludge build up? underneath the valve cover was very clean.
Did I read something wrong? I thought there was buildup
if not nevermind
