lower motor mount - how to tell if worn out?
Saturday, April 02, 2011 12:46 PM
I was doing an oil change and inspecting under my car. I found that the the lower engine mount (the one that looks like a dog bone) has a bit of play. I can move it side to side on the part that attaches to the engine. It moves up and down easily too.

It's a torque strut mount, if the rubber has too much play than replace it, pretty simple to do i replaced mine a month ago was like 20 dollars...although i didnt replace it because the rubber was worn, here is a pic
Old Vs. New

You can take a pry bar and check for back and forth movement.

The mount sits front to back, as opposed side to side like the one does from the RF strut tower to the engine.

Therefore this mount controls forwards/backwards movement.

Cluck when going into gear, idle rough?

I will have to take a peak how it looks when engine is running and engaging gears. My friend said my engine moves alot when I start it or when I switched gears.

.

With stock mounts, the engine will move a decent amount between shifts. Not unusual.

I always thought when you're at a stop then you take off but when you take off if the car will make a loud knock that when you need motor mounts

Yes, and u could always brake torque the motor in little burps and see. it will move but it should not move a ton. If your in doubt chabge both, there cheap enough and simple to swap.

thanks so much, this post helped me figure out what was with my gf's car. we replaced the upper mount and it still has this noise and you can feel it when u go from reverse to drive or the other way around and when u dump it in neutral while its going and goto a stop you can feel the motor or something shift (physically move), but it seems fine when you drive. going to get this tommorow, thanks a million.!!!
