I purchased a new pump from an Autozone, and their installation guide mentioned adding some type of compound to the new pump before replacing it. What is this, and does it need to be done?

chances are they're talking about silicone. if this is the case, your best seal is going to come from making sure the surfaces are clean and using a proper gasket.

Apply some sealer to both sides of the gasket, let it tack up then bolt on.
