HELP! Buzzing / clicking relays

OK, I will try to be as thorough as possible because this problem is driving me and my mechanic nuts

Intermittently when I try to start my 2000 Sunfire GT, the fuel pump wont turn on, the fuel pump relay will "buzz", , then the hazard / turn signal relay will click repeatedly, and sometimes the headlights will quickly flash.
I've checked the fuses, replaced the FP relay. re seated the connections at the FP relay. Battery is charged, and if I play around long enough CAN get the relay to stop buzzing and the car will start, but it's left me stranded and had to tow it home already.
Im thinking theres a bad ground or short but does anyone have a clue where I should look next? What does the turn signal and FP relay have in common?
Thx

By the sound of it, I would take off the steering wheel panels and check the wires coming from the ignition cylinder, and the multi switches. It sounds like there might be a crossed wire in there. All of those problems you described all "start" right around the key. Meaning the common wiring point of all three issues is around the steering wheel. For example: You turn the key, and it's supposed to send a signal to prime the fuel pump, then start the vehicle. In your case, your turing the key, and your fuel pump isn't getting the signal, instead it's sending power to the hazard switch/head light switch, which all connect at the steering column.

The only other possibile place for a wiring problem with be at the PCM, since this is the only other place all of these wires come in contact. This is by best guess though.

Have you had/did have/or removed a remote starter recently?

Thanks Sunfiretun3r
I haven't removed a remote starter but there is some kind of after market relay at the ground point on the drivers side of the engine, I believe this was added as a safety recall.
This is very frustrating as the car is working fine right now and I have been unable to dupe the problem but I'm afraid it will leave me stranded again if I try to go anywhere.

Would a crossed wire as you described cause the FP relay to buzz?

Thx

Well, that could be a bad fuel pump relay. Relays are pretty cheap and in my opinion, not really worth going through the "proper" testing procedure. What I would do is swap the fuel pump relay with something like the horn relay and drive it for awhile see if the problem stays with the fuel pump, or moves to the horn. If it moves to the horn, then the relay is bad. If it stays with the fuel pump, then it's another crossed wire issue. My bet though is it's probably a bad relay.

Thanks, but I've already tried swapping the FP relay for the AC relay (their exactly the same) , The fuel pump wont come on as long as the relays are buzzing

OK, A small detail i forgot to mention earlier is that there is no power on the grey wire at the harness near the pump itself while the relay is buzzing.
Is there a good way to check for a crossed / shorted / bad ground wire using a multimeter at the relay or fuse panel?

THx

Yeah you gatta check for resistance. Excessive resistance would indicate a fault.
You can backprobe the harnesses for the switches, just make sure you don't check resistance on a wire that goes to the PCM. You will fry it! You need to know resistance of the wires to check if they are crossed or shorted.

Have you checked simple things like battery terminals/grounds at the engine?

Ive checked and cleaned the battery terminals, the ground at the front of the engine (just above the fan) and the positive going to the relay / fuse box under the hood.

Im thinking of looking at the ignition control module next, anyone think this would be a logical next step? would a bad grnd at the ICM cause the relays to buzz?

Thx
