Quick Question About A/C

I hope to receive a quick answer before I jump and buy a part...

So for years my A/C clicks on and off with regularity, generally clicking off when it's hot outside
I was once told that it's most-like my Hi/Low pressure switch, there is plenty of freon, there's not leaking, the compressor works great when the a/c is clicked on

Does anyone have an experience with this and do you think getting a pressure transducer is a good step? There's only place in town that carries it and I'm thinking of going a head and getting it to see if fixes my problem, just looking for some quick advice!

First and foremost what are your low and high pressure readings? That in itself will tell a lot about what is going on. Also need to see what the pressures are doing when the fan kicks on to help pull down the temp/pressure on the high side. I would almost bet that what is happening is that the pressure is just high enough to turn the a/c on (low pressure usually turns on the compressor above 20psi and turns off below that too) but one the high pressure side gets high/hot enough (remember higher temps mean higher pressures here) the fan is coming on and it is pulling the pressures down but at the same time pulling the low pressure side down to low. A very good indication of it being low on freon.

Also I would not recommend replacing the sensor yourself if it turns out to be that. You will loose all of your freon and will need to pull a vacuum on the system to help remove any moister. Plus not to mention getting caught carries a LARGE fine. But if you do replace the sensor yourself I would recommend replacing your a/c drier as well since it helps trap any moister in the system.

Hope this helps you out.

wow, thanks for the response
I was told that the sensor has a ballcock that will block any freon coming out of the system once the sensor is removed

I had my high/low pressures checked a few years ago and can't remember what the readings are, with the information you've given me, I'll hold off until I can test to see what my readings are
The last time my car was in the shop (last summer) I mentioned my a/c acting up, they could never replicate the problem, they did check the system for freon and they said it was in the acceptable range

Thanks for the info, I'll break out my manual and see what I find!
