Lately when my car gets to little under 1/4 tank and i park it somewhere, it struggles to stay running. We'll it mostly happens when i park on a curved street, but the thing is there were plenty of times ive parked on both sides of the street while the empty light(check gauges) light was on and the next morning it started right up. First off, my street is not that curved at all but like all streets, it has a slight curve to the curbs and high in the middle. It seems it dont matter which side im parked on, it will start and die right away, only way to keep it running is to keep my foot on the gas revving it. I'll usually just put it in 1st, start it and keep revving while i go to the other side and wait a minute or so and it runs fine and i can drive, hard turns dont mess with it or anything. The wierd thing is that it dont matter which side im on, if it wont run on the left, i go right and runs fine, same with opposites. This morning I was on the left side, gauge read 1/4 tank, didnt wanna stay running. Kept revving, pulled to the right side, it stalled. My gauge drops to just about empty, but runs fine. Two days ago this exact thing happened, but I started on the right side and moved to the left. Gas is expensive, I usually dont go over 1/2 tank, but only when it gets under 1/4 tank this problem happens. Fuel filter is new also.
When i put gas in it, it seems to read about right, im pretty sure these cars have about 14.5 gallon tank or something around that, $30 is about 7 gallons which puts me just under half from little under 1/8th tank...im sure these gauges aren't 100% on point, but when it reads 1/4 tank and wont run, there's something way off.
I know there was a recall on the sending unit reading improperly.
Yeah, i'm thinking the gauge is reading wrong, today from 1/8 tank, i put 4 gallons, and it read just under 3/4th...so im just gonna guess by mileage how much i have left for now
I'm with Rich... I'm pretty sure it's the sending unit and it's in the tank, a common problem with the cavaliers. Not sure about any recalls though... nothing on Transport Canada's website...perhaps in the U.S. there may be something?
You might be able to get an OEM replacement (DELPHI) at Advance Auto for $348 +/- depending upon the model/year.
Use Coupon/Promo Code P20 will get you 20% off that item when purchasing online.
Perhaps you can get a kit to repair the gauge portion of the sending unit, I thought there were some on eBay, not sure whether or not they work.
Or you can save yourself some money and do like I do and use the trip odometer as a guide for fill-ups, every 500km (300miles) +/- depending upon how you drive and the season.
Eh if i keep it above 1/4 tank, it reads right so that's what ima do for now, but thanks
