Eating gas like a fat man at a Chinese buffet.

99 Sunfire 2200. Has been getting terrible mileage. I havent pulled actual numbers since idk what it actually did before but over the 2 hour trip from school to home it uses an 1/8 tank more than it used to and it swallows gas just cruising around in town and thats mostly what I do.

I have put on two new coils and plugs wires since I had a lot of corrosion on the coil terminals that caused it to miss. Plugs are a year old. NGKs gapped to .040. Checked and verified when I changed wires. I thought that that was what the problem was and the car seemed to be doing better but now its back to being a bastard. It sits most of the time in a parking garage so its not like its seeing much weather.

The only other thing I can see is a faulty ICM. What does everyone else think about that?

I recently had a 02 sensor go bad and my car was drinking gas, i drive 80 mi round trip every day to school and i wasted half a tank that day..i replaced the sensor and did some maintinance (plugs, wires, oil change, coolant flush, thermostat) and mine got better..unfortunatly my car blew a head gasket a couple days after

Check your air filter for breath ability, if it's extremely dirty your motor will be starved of air and burn more fuel, other than that it could be your O2 sensor. Any engine codes?

Upstream O2 is under a year old. Replaced it trying to chase an issue with a slow flip on the narrowband read out that I thought was related to my hard starting when the cars warm. Instead of changing quickly it would sit lean for awhile then rich and repeat.

I have no codes that are tripping a check engine light at this point.

I was told .04 by the guy at Advance. Iono. Its been at .040 since I put new plugs in a year ago. Doubt thats my problem though since this just started recently.

Idk what that word means. And the stickers under the hood say .06, just letting you know if you wanna go back and change it right.

Did you use platinum spark plugs? Non platinum plugs will work great for about a week or so then they will start to fowl.
Other than that have a close look at the fuel you are buying. Gasoline with an increased Ethanol content will decrease your fuel economy by 10 mpg +/-.
That's my opinion Best of luck

Theyre platinum if I remember correctly. I guess I could see the ethanol content increasing in the gas since I live in corn country.

Im just going to track it on the way home this weekend and see what kind of mileage Im pulling. Maybe Ive just changed my driving habits without noticing it.

Or your gauge could be reading incorrectly, a common problem with the cavaliers/sunfires.
