before i start. excuse my newbie decriptions.

i got a 97 cavaleir 2.2 OHV 188,000kms
its got a tick.. its not really loud but its there, before i put my new obnoxiously loud muffler on it i could here it pretty good
when i did the valve cover gasket my a.d.d kicked in and i was just figgiting with stuff and noticed (counting right to left) that the 2nd and 3rd wer a bit loose, i could rattle them around a little bit.. could that be the tick? someone told me a cupple collapsed lifters? im by far not a mechanic. i know a few things but nothing about this. im gunna pick up a haynes manual for the car. and i have every tool i could ever imagine needing in my life. so if i can get some suggestions ill use the manual and git-r-dunn

Loose rocker arms would definitely do it. Collasped lifters could also do it, but they are more of an annoyance and won't threaten your engine's life. I am more familar with Mazda's KL than I am with any GM, but KLs are notorious for harmless lifter (HLA) ticking.

yea you can reuse the gasket if it looks good not torn ect. you may wana put some sealant on it if you have some handy. you should try to post a video of it on here or youtube so we can hear it. although i imagine its probably fine. ive had a couple mazda a mx3 gs and protege and mazdas are known to tick lifters and valve noise.....well 2.2l cavis are to. lifters valve, pistons(when cold) some timing chain chatter. all of that is almost always normal in these motors. once in awhile youll find a quiet one but after awhile you learn to appreciate the noises they make kinda like a harley loud and crude but sounds like a mechanical device. and the rockers its normal for them to freely wobble from side to side. if you can pull up on them and they rattle that way theyre loose but they should move but you can check them and see if they are in spec. miy first one made noise and i thought the rockers may be why tightened them up and sounded the same. 2.2 is known to sound like a tractor after awhile you just learn to smile and ignore it.

i was told to put half a qrt. of lucas oil stabilizer and it will help quiet it down, i havnt personally done it yet but my dad works at a oil company and he knows his stuff..i will try it and post my results

it may quiet it down because its thick but i wouldnt use it . wont fix anything. if you are worried about it fix it right. that wont fix it though. thats stuff also foams up which isnt good for lubercation. if you must use something use sea foam or marvel mystery oil for 500 miles with regular oil and drain it out replace with fresh oil. that will atleast clean the parts . personally if it were mine id change the oil every 500 miles for 5 times and then got every 3k miles. that will clean up everything. how many miles does it have? you may be hearing timing chain or lifters both are common on the 2.2

yea they all tick its when they are quiet thats somethings wrong. lucas will work i just from personal experience dont use anything but regular oil because i havent seen real proof that any of that made a difference and it cost so much lol
