FUEL PUMP!!!!
Friday, June 03, 2011 2:46 AM
im convinced my fuel pump is shot, when it decides not to start, a simple pound on the gas tank and it starts up. its an '02 z24 2.4ld9. only 95k on it. should the fuel pump be failing already? if so...... A) can an average joe replace a fuel pump on a cavi ... and B) what is my highest quality pump to put in there? i found a decent deal on a bosch. i know they have a good reputation, but is it better than the delphi? thanks a bunch!!

just grab a racetronix pump. its technically a performance pump, but a lot of the time its cheaper than a regular replacement pump.. Its pretty easy to drop the tank and do the pump yourself with basic tools. just make sure you get all the lines disconnected is all.

if its anything like replacing a pump in a blazer then, make sure you hack atleast 2 jacks...........and yes its actually fairly simple

thanks fellas. so you would go with racetronix over Bosch strictly performance wise not worrying about cost.?

Hey Brett, not sure about the Racetronix pump, but i'm actually replacing my fuel pump in my 2002 sunfire, i got my AC Delco kit off of ebay for around 60$... sure beats the 300-325$ any of the auto parts stores wanted.. and i hear the AC Delco one is one of the best pumps to go with.. although i haven't looked into the racetronix unit.

My problem the last week has been the fuel tank strap bolts... i'd go out right now and soak them in PB Blaster, or WD40 or liquid wrench, or whatever you have... i've wrenched on them a few hours already and used a full can of blaster on them... no luck.
I soaked them down real well a few days ago, and i'm going to try it one last time before i air hammer the bolt heads off and drill out the old bolts. :/

i swear to god that's the only rust underneath my car, just the fuel tank strap bolts. ugh.

good luck

well, i'm done, it took from 10am to about 4pm, i broke the bolts free but had to work them in and out from all the rust... took the better part of an hour.. That fuel pump assembly is frustrating! finally got everything put back together and it started right up like it used to. i took it for a drive and it seemed like it had a lot more throttle response.. but i can't tell if thats because of the pump or because i've been driving my uncle's f150 for the last week.

all i can say is make sure you don't have too much gas in the tank.. i had about an eighth of a tank and it was relatively easy.. i backed the car up onto drive up ramps and put a floor jack with some plywood underneath the tank... worked pretty well.

i still can't believe i put 2600 miles on the car since i had to bang on the tank., no stalling, no hesitating.. then one day it was just done. stalled 9 times on me on a 80 mile round trip.

Pump 60$
3 Cans of PB Blaster 14.37
saving 5-600$? Priceless.

i think you have to buy the whole assembly, cavs, at least the 2002, require the whole thing to be replaced.
