I have a 99 2.2 3 spd auto. Here's my problem when you put the car into reverse it sounds like it is engaging but when you press the accelerator it just revs, Also another thing I discovered was that while the car is in neutral you CAN'T push it backwards, And to roll it forward you have to rock it back and forth even for that . I have changed the fluid and filter. The fluid wasn't burnt and it was still very new looking there weren't any metal shavings. Please give me some ideas on what it could be

Is it possible that your shift cable has somehow gotten way off? Like when you put in reverse, you are really still in park? Have someone watch & make sure that the lever on the tranny is moving when you shift it inside the car. Just a thought. Its a cheap fix if that's it.

checking for a broken cable was the first thing i did . i took the cable off and shifted it with the linkage on the tranny. the wasn't any change
