vibrations at highway speed
Tuesday, June 21, 2011 3:30 PM
car shakes at anything over 60mph, like dangerously shakes lol.

front drivers side ball joint has grease ALL over the bottom of it whereas the passenger side is relatively clean. could a seal or something have burst on it? there's no external grease certs on them stock.

tie rod ends and ball joints have never been replaced. what is most likely my problem?

help me out guys please

Seal probably blew out on the ball joint. Pick the car up and check movement from 12 to 6 on the tire and then 9 to 3, if there is any movement i'd start with the ball joints. Tie Rods can take quite a toll if you are lowered too.

not lowered. still stock everything up front. 130k on the clock. i know, i know. it's time to replace the shocks/struts. problem is though the cars probly getting sold in a month or two. i need it to make one last long road trip for me down to st louis and i'm not interested in spending 500 bucks to replace the struts, mounts, and all that jazz when i'm turning around and selling it that soon. i just need it to last about another 1,000 miles at most.

so if it's a quick 50 dollar fix with the ball joint i'm all good with that. i just don't have the time or extra money to get it back in to tip top shape.

only things that've been replaced up front over the last year or so are, pads, rotors, sway bar end links (both sides), passenger side wheel bearing.

yeah just replace the ball joint then if you are selling it. Struts are honestly probably ok and still have some play. Go on rockauto and get a cheap ball joint, take the control arm off, drill them out and bolt the new one in, fairly easy and simple job.

Then again the vibration may just be the front tires and wheels being out of balance. But yeah, check for any loose front end parts before doing anything.

replaced ball joint. problem persists.

i noticed while letting off the accelerator at about 65 that's when the vibes became worst. anybody got any idea's?

wheels are weighted and balanced correctly, and the car was aligned a few months ago so i think i can pretty much rule the wheels out. (i hope anyway) what the hell is causing this?

wheel bearing well actually hub assembly

i thought wheel bearings only made god awful noise? when the passenger one was out that's all it did, no vibes.

I'd check your hubs next, how are the strut mounts? My car vibes a tiny bit because my mounts are shot....

i'm sure the mounts are shot like the struts and shocks. any way to check?

did you by any chance jack it up and do a "shake down" on the front end?

this would be more definitive than randomly guessing parts and throwing money around

no, care to explain?

The same thing I explained earlier.
Jack the car up, wheels off the ground.
Grab the tire at 12 and 6 o clock position and shake, that will tell you if the hub or ball joint is bad if it has some play.
Grab the tire at 9 and 3 o clock position and shake, that will determine a tie rod end.

yes i have done that.

You said the wheels are balanced correctly, when is the last time they were checked? Could have thrown off a wheel weight.

Did you ever hit a pothole recently or any large bumps? Could have broken a band in your tire or bent a rim. What kind of tires are they?

The tires were replaced after I hit a pothole snapped all the studs off and the wheel went flying

I'm gonna guess the hub is bad on the side you hit if you hit that hard, or anything else in the suspension could be bent up

check for anything that is bent, could have even bent the inner tie rod or control arm

imgoin for cv shaft, being that it shakes without a load taking up the slack.

Okay not thread jacking, but I've been searching for an answer for my vibration issue at high way speeds as well, but mine isn't severe. My ball joints/tie rods/struts/wheel bearings/ mounts, inner tie rods all check good in a front end diag. All I'm left with cv's, or so I think. My vibration goes almost away with no load on the engine (foot off accelerator), and gets worse with foot on accelerator at about 65.

What is going on with my car?
