special tool looks like a mag light, unthreads from the rack and you obviously have to take the outer off to get the inner out!

well I have play in the wheel bout 1/16th of an inch and if I hit a pot hole I hear a clacking noise outter one is for.sure good. I replaced wheel bearing 4000 miles ago but I checked the inner by locking the steering wheel and wiggling the didn't see the boot moving but I figured it was bad because of age . could wheel bearing be bad already? could that make a clacking noise. and the bearing does, not growl at all like the previous one that was bad thank you for the help.

There is a bit better way to check. Lift up the front end, letting the suspension droop, then shake the tire with one hand on the tire and the other on the inner, pressing the boot in till you feel where the ball and socket is and seeing if there is movement there. Also, leave the steering unlocked either by leaving the key on or trans in neutral.

I know, sounds like a no brainer, but it's the easiest and best way I know how.

I have a inner ball joint bad on my vert. Just do as mac said. If the outer doesn't move, but there is movement in the wheel, then its ur inner. That's how I found out mine is bad. But instead of going throught the hassle of changing the inner, when I do my motor swap, I'm just gonna throw a new rack into it. Goodluck.
