Hi,

I have a 2002 4-dr Z24, 2.4L

It's been about 2.5 yrs now since my fuel pump died, and it just died again. i got my car fixed last time at a garage. should a fuel pump die after 2-3 yrs? my factory one lasted about 7 yrs...

thanks!

depends on the quality of the pump you got. you can buy the cheapy ones just to get going again and maybe thats what the issue is here. or could just be a faulty unit(they exist)

It also depends if your keeping the tank full or near empty, the lower the tank is the faster your burning out your pump.

Do you routinely run the thing til the light comes on? Just curious.

Ya if you don't fill up until the light comes on, the motor gets hot, the fuel is what keeps it cool, and lasting longer. So it depends on how you treat your car.

Thanks for the replies all!!

- I did buy the cheap one, had a choice of 2

- i currently have about 203 000 km on my car. can't remember the kms when the first one went ,but it lasted about 7 yrs.

- i have run the gas down more than a few times..my gas gauge was faulty, and now doesn't work at all. I fill up 25 L and re-fill at around 200 km.

- i can't remember the name of the cheap fuel pump i got, something like symantic or something. i know the owners of the garage, they charged me $50 towing and the parts and labour for $500 flat. i think that's a good deal, right?

How's your fuel pressure regulator, these can go bad and cause a higher fuel pressure which would cause your pump to run harder and burn it up.

I would do the fuel pump myself if I were you. Do you have a second car? Fuel Pumps over in here are like 200 dollars or something like that, and its not hard to do yourself. But I guess if you don't want to bother, 500 is an alright price for a shop.

- how do i have my fuel pressure regulator checked?

- i have been told it is a big job to change the fuel pump; the tank needs to be dropped. I do not have the tools, etc to do this. no second car, and i had it done already. actually feels like my car is running better, smoother acceleration...

thanks!

Oh well if you can't do it, than you can't do it. And you need to bring it to a shop to check the fuel pressure, which is what the shop should of checked before and after replacing the fuel pump.
