Hi everyone,
I have a 2002 Cavalier with the 2.2 motor, 130,000 miles. A few months ago the car started to develop a problem. Whenever the A/C is running the engine will rev up and down a few hundred rpm’s. It is very noticeable when stopped at a stop light. When the A/C is switched off the car runs fine. We took it to a mechanic and he said the A/C compressor was bad. So this past weekend he rebuilt it. When I picked it up this morning it was not as bad, but not perfect.
Now I have cold air, but the original problem is still occurring.
Does anyone have any ideas why this is occurring?
Thanks!
Have you checked the Idle Air control? I would try taking it off & cleaning it. When you say he rebuilt the compressor, what exactly did he do? Not many shops actually rebuild them. Have you used this mechanic before? Just wondering if maybe he refilled it w/oil & freon and charged for rebuilding the compressor? If so, the problem will probably come back. Just my 2 cents.
It is a new compressor. I don't know why I said it was rebuilt. I will check the Idle Air control. It is the first time we have used this mechanic. The car has been great up to this point so I have not needed a mechanic before.
Thanks for the help!
im guess manual... what is the idle normally? when you first start the car up does it rev higher than 1300?(with and without the ac on)
My AC compressor/clutch started making bad noise about 9 months ago (2.4L LD9 engine). It has since gone away but will come back slightly from time to time and I have a sh*tty feeling it will come back full swing. What did it cost you to replace the compressor? As stated above I was told they can't repair them anymore and you need to replace the whole unit.
