Hey guys,
Looking for some advice as to what to do next.....
My car is a 01 Sunfire GT...
New/Newer front end components =
HAWK HPS + Powerslots maybe 15000km's so far..
both front end wheel hub assemblies 0km's just installed.
The issue: there is a screeching/metal on metal sound coming from the driver side. This occurs on braking, and cornering (left hand turns only).... I thought I had a bad hub so I replaced both hubs... when I did that I ensured that the pads/rotors were still in good shape and cleaned them up... issue still exists...
Is there something I am missing??? all steering components appear to be in good shape and all the grease points have been greased.
I always thought you would feel a fault CV joint through your steering? I visually inspected the CV joint and it appears to be ok from inspection...
The car steers 100% perfect... none of the typical CV clunks... It's a cyclical scratching sound.
maybe strut mount bearing or an issue with the rack
A axle would click...when turning. Not metal to metal when stopping.
Decided to take another look at it today... pulled everything apart (down to the wheel well)...
Kind of feel like a dolt right now though... turns out that the passenger side was as I thought 100% ok.... switched over to the driver side and realized that even though the top portion of the brake pad still had 30-40% the bottom portion where the squealer was it was down to around 5% and practically sitting on the squealer...
Not really that impressed with the HAWK pads considering they were installed with new powerslots (as recommended) and were properly bedded and installed yet they need to be prematurely replaced.
BTW swapped in a new set of pads.... sprayed the backs down with break quite and cleaned up everything using cleaner and the car is back to normal.

If your pads are wearing unevenly across the surface of the pad, then you have a caliper issue.
Before i put on my powerslots, i replaced my calipers and I' glad I did. both sides were wearing even evenly. The inner pad had very little left, maybe 1/32ed inch and other pad had maybe 3/32'ed inch, but, accross the pad, the front verses the back were worn slanted. Meaning the side of the outer pad facing the front of the car had more material than the side facing the back of the car, and the other way around on the inner pad.
That can be caused my a bad caliper or slide pins. Check into that.
Also, make sure you clean and grease the slides on the knuckle. I didn't once or twice and it ended up ruining rotors and pads because I failed to clean it up and make it slide nice and smooth.
We have sliding calipers, just grease the slide pins, if that dont help then its gotta be the piston is getting stuck(bad seal) which you just replace the caliper for that.

Agreed, except you could also rebuild the caliper. I'm still running my original stock calipers. Original slides as well. Permatex brake parts lubricant does wonders to the slides.
It's cheaper to get a new one then reman.
