1996 chevy cavalier 2.4l ld9

So i was going down the highway at 60 about to shift into 5th when a stupid dear ran out and insted of shifting i ended up droping the clutch hard and slaming the breaks... Didnt end up hiting the dear but now i have this horible knock in the engine. If the motor is under load there is no sound once so ever. however when i decellerate it knocks and knocks when idleing.. will also knock if givin gas while in neutal.

Bent valve or what? bad lifter i dont know much about dule over head cams.

Should i just replace the head and call it a day? im pretty sure its in the top end

Grab a long screwdriver and put your ear to one end while touching the block/head with the other. That will give you a good idea of where its at.

Given your description though, id actually be looking more at your lower end. Be sure to check things like engine mounts after events like this too.

That would be nice, but I am also sure he does not want to reassemble it.What is your procedure to compress the lifters? As for the lifters being hard to compress, they have oil in them and that makes them harder to compress. If you do find one easy to compress by your hand... I would replace it... I personally would replace all of them and call it a day, if your sure it's lifter tick of course. I also would inspect your cam lobes for excessive wear.

yea I was hoping he would have recorded.it before taking it apart. no harm in asking I do that with every sound my car makes every day theres a new noise some go away others don't

Belive me i though of recording it but my phone is horible at recording sounds so i would have done no good. a bad injector would have sounded like a blown piston... Anyways im replacing the entire exhaust cam tower encluiding lifters and then the intake cam. Nothing wrong with intake bit i figured i already wanted to do secret cams. I have one lifter that the skirt is bent on from the aproximate location that the nice has been coming from. also i honestly think i bent the cam or the tower. Reason being is i took the tower all the way off rubed a little oil on all the mating serfices of the cam and tower and put the cam in half of the turn its free and easy the other half i have to grab the end of the cam with plyers to make it turn.

Well onto the head i guess.. got the exhaust cam tower cam and lifters inplace noise is calmed down a bit. However its still present. I swear it has to be on the topside of the engine. Must be a bent valve? Strange thing is i dont knotice a loss of power? What do you guys think what should i try now?

The part i find the wierdest it only does it coming off load. used to do it under idle if not moving but since cams and lifter that stoped.

Could They have made the oil pump any biger? Anyways i spun cyl 1 rod bearing.. crank is still smoth as a babys butt so even if i can limp the motor for another 5000 miles that will give me time to get another motor for it. number 2 looks like it was about to spin.. number 3 looks like it was brand new right from the package and number 4 well it was the second best.. all four have new bearings going to get a torque wrench to put it all back together.. ill let you know when im done if i get lucky or not.

Ouch man, that knock was bad. I have a LD9 that I just ripped out of my 00 Vert and installed the Ecotec. Still working on it (started friday night) but was the best option IMO. I have had two LD9's that spun bearings and I just got tired of it. But either way, good luck!

Oh I hear ya. The sad part is, it will happen again. There is no if about it. But I do understand. I just didn't want to deal with the whole rebuild and just went to a more reliable engine imo. I'm not trying to convince u in anyway just throwins some ideas out there. But the problem with ur car is it being a pre 00 it would take a lot of work to get the eco into your car. But either way. Goodluck man. Glad to see ur sticking with it.
