Hi, I own a 1996 Oldsmobile Achieva. I am having an issue but I'm not sure what the problem is. When traveling at highspeeds approx around 65 mph, when moving into the left lane or going left around a bend my car starts to vibrate. I purchased this car from my aunt and she said the right wheel bearing was going bad. Of course, she was told this from tireman who could of just been looking for more cash. I have purchased a wheel bearing but there is no play when trying to move the wheel. I'm not sure what the problem is. Any ideas? I also have a popping noise when going over bumps.. I'm guessing struts?
Thanks
wheels bearings dont have to have play to be bad, axle nuts hold them tight
popping over bumps may be bad strut mounts
Well being a 1996 I would bet the car has the original struts. And try the standard bounce test on each corner of the car.It should only bounce 1 time not wobble and heck it might NOT even bounce(not a good sign). If you do not know how to do struts or the compression tool I would get a quote from a good shop you trust and have them replaced. You will need a alignment and will assume the car has struts all the way around. As for the noise while turning it could be your CV joint is going bad.Check the boots on both sides for cracks and leaking grease (a worn boot, and brg failure is to follow that). That is what comes to mind.Just giving you some info bc doing struts with out the proper know how you may do more harm to yourself, and not get the job done correctly.Ok
