Everytime the fan engages on my 2200 98' sunfire the entire car gets a pretty good rattle, any ideas why?
Might be missing a fan blade, or a blade might be bent, throwing off the balance.
I'll check both of those today and see whats up, hopefully ill reply good next time!
Seems like all the blades are intact, and nothing is missing. The car runs SMOOOOTH, until the fan kicks on. I can turn the A/C on but keep the fan off and its smooth, but as soon as it hits that temp for the fan to come on the entire car rattles..
Is there a fan mount that's broke?
Take a look under the hood when the engine is up to temp and see if the fan itself is vibrating?

maybe theres mud on the fan blade?
It's funny, my car does this too. I recently replaced the radiator fan motor because the other one is shot. What I've noticed though is that the fan housing, isn't completely secured on the radiator. By that I mean that the I'm guessing the clip or however it mounts to the radiator is broken. So If I crawl under the car and try to move the housing, It has about a half an inch of give that I can wiggle it back and fourth; but from the top It's secure. I'm wondering if that may have something to do with it.
Mine does it because of a voltage strain on the motor. The motor drops in rpm until the fan is up to speed. I assumed this was because of the current it takes to spin it up putting a strain on the alternator and ignition etc.
It's a newer motor also, the original one burned up.

Does not make sense. If your ac is on then the fan is running. If it is not running while the ac in on then something is wrong.

My thoughts exactly as I was reading that. Only thing that makes sense is if he has the fan wired to a switch only. Chances are if thats the case it isn't done right and the fan isn't getting enough power to spin fast enough.

Maybe the a/c is kicking on and off because low freon....when the a/c kicks on, the idle will surge, when a/c kicks on, the fan goes on with it..maybe?
