installing new gaskets, following the instructions from my Haynes manual, says to 'install the seal to a precise 0.020 inch depth from the outer housing face' blah blah blah. which to me means push it into the cover tightly so it doesnt fold over all screwy like and squirt oil all over the floor. i have the 2.4 and the instructions were written for both the 2.3 and 2.4 so im not sure how much is for the 2.4 specifically, anyone speak Haynes that would care to translate or at least share what worked for you??
Ok, I just got done changing all my exhaust cam gaskets. Which gaskets are you refering to again? The gaskets on either 'end' of the cams?

nope the ones between the cam cover and the cam housing, look like long stringy kind of gaskets (they arent round), should have been orange i think. basically a strip of gasket on either side running the length of the engine, sit inside grooves on the cam covers
Oh ok, not sure if those have to have those measurements because when they housing is torqued down those measurements get thrown out the window. I just installed and torqued to specs.

alright, seems like it shouldnt be that complicated, thanks for the help
yes...what he said..just install them into the groove. make sure you using the RIGHT gasket for each cam tower..they are all 4 shaped different. the thin sharp side of the gasket should be pointed out...just press them in with your hand, then when you torque the cover down all will be good. make sure you tq the cover down THEN put the end gaskets on.
another problem with a gasket area. i got the whole thing back together and after priming the oil system i noticed oil leaking from between the timing chain housing and the exhaust cam tower. hadnt even gotten it started and it was already leaking some oil. anyone dealt with this problem? maybe the water pump gasket is too thick? cam cover and housing dont create a flush surface, maybe too big a ridge?
have it apart again, was considering running a bead of rtv sealant around both sides of each cam housing-to-timing chain housing gaskets and see if that seals it up good.
anyone?
Put rtv sealant around both sides of each of the gaskets (cam tower to timing chain housing). Looks like it helped, slowed the leak down but there is still oil leaking from the exhaust cam gasket area. Any suggestions? Anyone experienced this also?
Will try rtv again, see if i can get it to seal better, running out of options though I think.
Comments and advice appreciated, thanks.
yes you have a gasket installed incorrectly.

There are only two sides to the gasket, I was careful when installing it. Would you please clarify, I'm not sure how it could be installed incorrectly.

1 side goes against the cam tower housing, the other against the timing chain housing. Also on the exhaust side there is a hole that has to be covered. 1 gasket is for intake housing, the other for exhaust.

yes, I believe I did all of that correctly.
Possibility that the timing chain housing is warped? Is this common?
