Quick question. There is a noise that occurs in both my sister's cavalier (99 Cavalier Base Model) and my 02 Z24. We have different engines, different transmissions, and different tires (mine are new btw). This noise is usually only audible when coasting down a hill (doesn't matter If in gear or not). It sounds like a siren. Not a police car or ambulance siren, but a fire siren like the ones used by fire houses and fire departments that blast all throughout town. The siren noise raises in pitch as my speed increases and vice versa. It's not really annoying, it's pretty faint, I'm just curious as to what this could be. The only thing that I can think of is the air hittin a certain part of the car or something in the wheels. Any idea what this could be?
Are you driving both cars, or is she driving hers? It sounds like you may be hearing things.
When I drive hers (used to be mine then I sold it to her). Definitely not hearing things though, I've had a friend of mine question the same exact noise while riding in my car and I simply told him i had no idea what it was lol.
I've had this sound too, sounds like a siren or kind of a whine.. whaaaaaaaaaaaa lol.. I have no clue what it is either, something in the trans I would assume. I have checked my fluid levels, have been down some lately due to some leak somewhere but my fluid stays up there... I have also heard this sound in one of our tractors but its more noticable in higher gears like 6-8th.. but my dad said that noise has been happening since he bought the tractor in the 60's and its been just fine till now. I wouldn't be concerned till you hear a grinding noise..
I don't know man, I thought maybe it was the transmission, but I found it a little strange that it would be the transmission if both cars are making the same noise and have two completely different transmissions in them. I'm gonna try to record the noise today and see If I can post it here.

I made two recordings with my mp3 player. Came out really well, turn up your volume a little and you'll be able to hear it. I couldn't find a site to upload this to so I could embed the sound clips, so you'll have to download it. It's perfectly safe.
DOWNLOAD Siren Noise- 2.66MB
My 03 Cavalier Does this, and so does my 07 Cobalt, Same motor...same transmission in both cars. Both handle fine, could be a wheel bearing or just worrying too much
ok you may laugh but check your speakers. have someone drive sit in the back and listen to them and then the fronts. also I couldnt listen to your recording
Hmmm. Might be nothing to worry about, but still curious. And im pretty sure its not my speakers but valid point. Definitely comes from the front end of my car.
my water pump made a simillar noise when it was getting bad
hmmm, but then why would the noise raise in pitch as the car gained speed although the transmission was in neutral (therefore the engine was at idle speed and never changed regardless of speed)? I think It's gotta be something in the wheel assembly or the noise of air passing through a certain part of the car. Unless I suddenly don't know how transmissions work, but I'm pretty sure the transmission is always moving at the speed of the engine, not the wheels. Even then, it's two different transmissions, they shouldn't make an identical noise.
mine does the same thing at around 60kmh or about 35mph. in my car i think it is the final drive unit in the tranmission
Does the Final Drive gear spin in relation to the speed of the vehicle, even when it's in neutral?

final drive unit always spins at vehicle speed. even in neutral
Ahh, that's probably what it is then. Pretty interesting.
My car (04 Cav) make a weird noise to when coasting at low speeds. Sounds like a turbine slowing down but is very quite ad barely noticeable.
thank god...I thought i was going nutty because I was hearing the same thing in my car too and could not find ANYTHING to be the cause of it. Glad to hear that it seems like a common occurrence.
