windshield wiper motor broken?
Monday, January 10, 2011 10:43 AM
So last night during the big snowstorm of the south. I was driving with my wipers on, since it was wet and all. All of a sudden there was a pop and my driver side windshield wiper stopped working. The passenger side is still working. Anybody know what happened, did the motor break. Pop off a gear or what? I have NO idea what happened.

Can you hear the motor turning on the broken side?

Sounds like the arm either broke at the joint or a bolt if it is made that way came out.The motor is probably fine while it still makes the opposing side work.My guess is u need to remove the valence around the wiper motor to see the arm/joint connection broken.I'd bet the wiper arm joint toast.Granted I am not fluent with the newer Js wiper arm assemblies are pretty similar over all on how they are assembled and work.

The motor will be fine,I had this happen n my 05 sunfire,Pull the wiper arms off, then remove the plastic shield,You will see a big metal part and if you look in you will see one of the 2 arms broken and hanging there..Now you will not be albe to fix it due to the fact they use cheap ass plastic,So next either go to the wrecker and get a new one,Or visit a parts store and get a new one,New from Gm is about 250 or so,wrecker cheap I would think...The part I belive is called a wiper transmission,And once you see it,It is very easy to do,4 bolts..And before you reinstall everthing do your self a favor and buy a small bottle of Never Sieze And applie it to all bolts and to the stubs where the wiper arms go on..Good luck

You may get lucky and just have to snap the socket over the ball on hte wiper transmission and linkage. If not, it's not difficult to replace as stated above.

I took off the valance and looked in there, and the linkage to the transmission popped off the wiper arm. I put it back on...worked for about 20 mins. then did it again. From the research I've done, I can get just the wiper linkage's for both sides instead of getting the whole transmission. I hope I can, so it won't be $300+ for it.

It sucked when I had to go to NC and this thing kept popping off while I was in the mountains..

How do you loosen the nuts holding the valance on? They don't look like the normal type of fasteners.

I just pulled the pin up some and pulled them out.

BS that you can't fix it. I did. And it only cost me $5 and half an hour. 1 month later it's still working fine.
I'll explain when I get home from work later tonight.
Maybe this weekend I'll make a how-to.

Hmmm, posted in March and no write up as of today. Did you ever make it home from work? lol

Haha yeah I did, and totally forgot to make a write up.

And btw, it's still holding steady, however, if I use the wipers for over the entire day, they have a minor squeak, nothing the radio up a few volume notches doesn't fix. Beats $300 for a new wiper linkage. I'd guess adding a very small amount of wheel bearing grease would solve this issue.

I'll get on that write up, but I'll have to use some generic pics, and get some part numbers for the bushing kit I bought at advance.
Hell, I still have to make a write up on the grand am seats, since I did one, but it's gotten lost in the forum since I posted it in another thread, not by itself.
