I have a 1997 Chevy Cavalier (4cyl, 2.2l). Recently it started making a strange noise from near the serpentine belt. I was thinking it might be the belt tensioner bearing or a pulley but im not completely sure. I'll post a video below of the noise. Thanks for any help.

wow that is loud. that's what my belt sounded like before i replaced one on my 98 cavalier, but that is pretty loud, it is probably what Rich said or something seriously needs WD-40.

you don't wd-40 ANYTHING on a belt drive system. wd-40 is NOT a proper lubricant. even if it were, by the time a bearing starts making THAT kind of noise, no amount of lubricant would bring it back to life. something needs to be replaced.

thats the clutch on your ac
Best advice, I could give you, Is take the serpentine belt off the system, Start the car and see if the noise goe's away. My guess would be the alternator is bearing or the a/c clutch is worn out.
Good Luck.
Try turning the AC system on and off while listening to it. You should notice a change in pitch or even elimination as the clutch moves around. If of course its your compressor at all.
Yup, sorry to kick this up from hell, but girls car makes the same noise and its her ac compressor.
sorry to bring this back, but my wifes car is dong the same thing, we changed the belt but the noise is still there. it goes away when u turn the ac on,. so im pretty confiedent thats te problem. what exactly do i need to change to replace in order to make it stop the squeling. and anybody have a part number and or price for it. thanks for all the help all
You can replace the ac clutch. Best bet is calling around to a few parts stores and looking on ebay, and rockauto.com they usually have some used ones for good prices.
great thats what i was hoping to hear. is it a hard job? i dont know much about cavaliers lol its the wifes like i sazid before . wish it looked like yours, thats a nice looking cavalier.
ok again its coming from the graveyard on this one, i have the same type of sound, but it comes and it goes, AC isnt even on and ive been thinking of taking it completely out, as it'll cost me WAY too much to get it all fixed and working (plus i got a sunroof so its all good), anyways gonna start on the serp belt and see what happens
you can just buy the smaller belt that doesnt use the A/C, you dont even have to remove it
just make sure it's the a/c making the noise before you do anything....take off the belt and spin each by hand, you'll either feel the grinding or hear the noise
