Seems its been popping up more lately. So here it is on the front page. You cannot bondo, fiberglass, or just sand and paint it. The whole area will need to be cut out and a new piece welded in. You can buy new pieces from Sherman Associates (sorry, no link on my phone) All other methods will fail. Post away with any questions
Sometimes it does not need to be cut out. It can be sandblasted and filled sometimes.

Surface rust can be sandblasted..eliminating the rust and then filled.
Very seldom does it happen but it does.
I didnt say every or all..but some. Any rust that originated from the back of the panel though will need to be cut out and welded in.

if you want to do a hack job, or you can do it right and never worry again.

Very light rust can be blasted off. I mean very light as in it looks like pepper sprinkled on the metal. I wouldn't bother wasting my time trying to sand off something worse.

yea..Ive done that repair, I cut the rusted metal out and welded in new metal. And that metal piece is part of the rocker, which is part of the cars structure

Very true. Also remember on a normal unit body car, like a cavy, all of the body panels are also part of the cars structure.

ive dealt with surface rust by sanding heavily and using the "rust proof" primer(not really rust proof but is supposed to stop the rust from spreading. It has worked well for me...ive used it on 2 cars and never had bubbling after the spot was properly painted.

Ospho works great if the metal is salvageable, my dad's used it for years.
Despite this thread, I predict over the next 3 months, we'll still see AT LEAST a dozen "I have a huge hole rotting through my rocker, I'm gonna ask if I can fiberglass it shut and bondo it, you guys are going to tell me no, but I'm still going to do it anyway because I know better than people with years of experience" type of threads.

Ospho?? what exactly is it? like naval jelly a rust remover? ok say that works for surface rust but what about behind the reaer quarter panels? theres rust inbetween the sheet metal and is starting to come thru the surface metal should i just cut out the rear quarters and replace them with new sheet metal? hit me back asap plz im in the process of repairing it now and need to know!!!
